I found an Highland Park (vintage age) slab saw which lacked a top. I may eventually have a sheet metal worker build a top for it, but in the interim I have devised a foot locker/storage box that works reasonably well. The specifics are: Source Walmart; 30 gallon Sterilite tub (discard cover); 30 1/2" L; 20 1/4" W; and 17 1/4"H These dimensions were almost exactly what I needed but I did have to shave about 1/4" off of the side closest to the pulleys and belts. The tub is slightly rounded on the corners and hence does not totally conform to the right angles of the saw tank, but they are reinforced with triangular plates that virtually cover the space left by the tub curvature (albeit with a vertical displacement of 1.5". I have used the saw in this configuaration for several hours and have seen virtually no fog or misting from these corners with the exception of the front left (drive side) where a bit of fog has been seen. I placed a flat piece of plastic under that corner to exclude additional circulation of the mist and it worked to my satisfaction. The top is attached at the back with hinges and a handle and hook for holding it up with a chain from the ceiling were added. I also cut an observation hole and covered it with plexiglass (caulked) across from the saw blade for monitoring purposes Its not a thing of beauty, and indeed I think it makes the saw a bit noisier than it would be with a metal top (the plastic may act like a resonator), but the $15 price is quite comfortable. Surely as many HP saws as are in existence, others out there are in need of renewing or installing a cover.
