I ground down the heads of the nails because they had a cross hatch pattern on them and I filed the tips off. I got some preforms ready to go! I hope this works out. I may try it tomorrow, but tomorrow is my birthday so I might be busy drinking my favorite adult beverage. My biggest concern about doing this is removing the nails from the cabs. These nails have a plastic coating. I'm really not liking the idea of filling the house with burning plastic smoke.

Good luck! If you don't want to use a torch to release the glue, pop them in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes. That should also make the glue release. Just takes a little longer is all. P.S. Happy birthday pretty soon!

A soak in acetone will break them loose.

Set up your torch and firebrick outside. Only takes a minute or two.
Btw, happy birthday!

Happy birthday Tela! Glad to see you ground down the points on the nails. I know a lot of folks use nails for dops but the idea has always made me uneasy. I've known of a couple of folks that lost an eye from a flying nail from a deflected hammer blow. And have had an occasional wooden dopped stone get caught funny on the wheel and yanked out of my fingers and had the wheel send it recocheing and flying. So have always equated the similar possibility if using a nail for a dop. So please be careful!

Hey it only takes a few seconds of contact on the shank of the nail with a torch to heat the super glue to a point where it will pop off; don't wait for the stone to drop. Your stone will not get hot, just warm. Long nails are more dangerous than short ones. Push short ones into a wine cork and consider the prep time of collecting wine corks part of the lapidary process. The cross hatching on the nails probably does not negatively affect the adhesion, although I prefer smooth. What's more important is to grind, sand, or heat the head of the nail before you reuse it for dopping with super glue. Super glues does not stick well to superglue. Just a bit of flame will burn it off, and I don't expect there to be noxious fumes, smoke, or odors to result. Do the deed and best of luck.

Good point! Superglue does not stick to superglue!

I never used superglue, but my uncle Johnny said "Put them in the freezer for a bit. the nail, superglue, and stone all contract at different rates and will pull apart."

Happy bday Tela. Take your cheap old butane torch, $9.95 at harbor freight and heat the nail a inch or so, mileage varies, behind the head. It comes right off. There is no soot, smoke and just a small smell. I push the cab against the tray testing every so often on my lap with the dop etc until the cab comes off. Drop the nail on the tray until it cools. Hotter is better because the glue gets crunchy like and comes off with my pocket knife. Tray on lap, covered with a towel, cabs sometimes fall off onto tray, pile of doped cabs, pile of hot nails, pile of cabs with crunchy super glue on backs. That plus the tv going and my fav diet coke on the end table.
Hope this helps Tela.

Happy Birthday! I am using some 1/2" brass dowel cut into 3'-4" lengths for my dop sticks. It seems to be working and the weight makes me think I have a good control of the dop and cab. P.S. I had a toddy in your honor on your B-Day...any ol' excuse ya know!

The boiling water idea is a good one too, I think I'll try it with my aluminum dops in one of the silicone rubber dop holders I make from scrap bits at work. If it works stay tuned

Happy birthday Tela. (As I write this it's officially Monday morning in your time zone).
With your new dopping technique you'll soon be turning out great cabs 12 months a year instead of just during the warmer months. Looks like a great idea but I'm still a wax-and-dowel dopper. When I dop, that is. Keep us posted on your progress.

Wishing you luck with that, Tela - mañana. You can put off trying the new technique one day, those rocks and nails will wait for you. Celebrating a birthday with an adult beverage (or two! ) much more important. Happy Birthday, hope you have a great one!

Thanks y'all!
As fate would have it, I woke up with a pounding sinus migraine. But, advil sinus seems to be taking the edge off. I never drink before noon, so I still have time to get rid of it before I can pop a cold one.

Tried the nail dops one time and they kept slipping in my clumsy fingers because they were so skinny. Found I could drill appropriate holes in half inch wood dowels and tap the nails into the wood before attaching the workpiece making much nicer, more comfortable handles to work with....Mel

Happy Belated birthday Tela! I can't believe we have almost the same birthday. Mine was on Saturday and I treated myself to a trip to the Wickenburg Gem and Mineral show this year followed by some good Mexican and an ice cream cone.
