Sometimes just for the fun of it! So this morning, I had an auction for a nice chunk of petrified palm wood on my eBay watch list coming to a close. No biggie, I have LOTS of stuff on my watch list. Decided the price was still within my comfort zone, so I set the timer and waited for the final countdown. Hit it and won with a one second snipe. One second snipes are normal for me... offer.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=232586456703&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2565Well, I had another rock on my watch list from the same seller ending a couple hours later. I don't like bidding early, as it leaves your bid hanging out there for others to shoot at. But, I needed to go to the mall to get Christmas cards. Went to the mall, but thinking about this 2nd rock. Made it home less than a minute before the auction ended. Hurried inside, shut off the alarm, and headed to the computer. Had to log in to eBay and go to watch list. Item had 15 seconds left. *snicker* Zero second snipe - www.ebay.com/bfl/viewbids/232587101682?item=232587101682&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2565Now, the good part. Notice the 2nd place bidder on both auctions. Wonder how far that moved me up on Santa's Naughty List. Hope I get rocks in my Christmas stocking! I do feel bad - in that I had stopped buying rocks recently so that my mail carrier wouldn't have to deal with them during the Christmas delivery rush. Guess I'm gonna have to make it up to her. ETA: tried to fix links to go to bid page, couldn't make that happen. doody...

Hope I don't come up against you! I try to get in on the final second, too.

I used to use a sniping tool that automatically placed your bid in the last one to five seconds. The developer sold it and the new owners wanted insane amounts for the one year subscription. They soon priced themselves into oblivion. They figured out too late that folks who snipe on e bay are not going to pay $50 per year for a proghram to do it for them.

The last time I tried to snipe something was for a saw. The price looked great, but I needed to account for traveling to pick it up. I dropped my bid with 10 seconds to go for several hundred more than the current bid, and was still beat out a couple of seconds later. Was actually surprised because two of us understood what it was really worth and would up the bid by that much with seconds left.

That chunk of petrified palm took a bit of thought as to how high I wanted to go on it. With shipping tacked on it was over 15 bucks a pound which seemed kinda steep to me for pet. palm. But, I view it as a display specimen. Want to face polish it and think it will be quite attractive then. Petrified palm and palm root are among my daily searches, and a piece of that quality doesn't come along very often. Sometimes ya just gotta say what the heck and go for it.

When something interests me on eBay I set my Max Bid at the absolute most I'm willing to pay for it. I chuckle when people try to outbid me by small increments during the last few seconds. If they do allow themselves enough time to outbid me, so what...it just means someone was willing to pay more than I was.

Some good there - setting and sticking to a max bid, and some bad - bidding early. By placing a bid before it is too late for someone else to react to it, you give the nibblers a chance to run your bid up. If they don't know I'm in the game, they may be going for a steal it low-ball price. Many don't know what they want to pay, and another bid influences their bidding. Idiots think bidding is fun. And do it multiple times on a single auction. That is amusing, provided it's not MY bid they are running up! Yes, I often lose my last second snipes. Someone's proxy bid is higher than I value the item. So be it. No regrets if I lose. I would regret bidding early enough to allow a nibbler to cost me more than necessary.
