The road is gated at the top of the W's and where the rock work ends about a half mile later. So whenever it gets the least bit snowy or icy, they just close the road. Creates a bottle neck because there are only 3 roads off the mountain to Chattanooga, and they always close the W and Roberts Mill Gap road when the weather is bad. So everyone has to go down the 'front' as it is called. But the front road off the mountain may not have all the cool CCC rock work, but does have this house: Around here they wouldn't close the road . More like , if ya want to live in Wisconsin deal with it . Those CCC guys did some awesome things up in this neck of the woods also . Pretty cool house . Not sure about practical , but cool . But, in Wisconsin, there are no Mountain Passes, per say. I am very familiar with a few remote and not so remote roads, which become impassible when there is a lot of snow/ice. Yes, what the CCC did was amazing. Lots of projects in the Blue Hills, which remain today. The quality of work speaks for itself.

With that first picture of the road in summer, why are there carpenter's squares lying in the road?
We have a few hairy roads here in Vermont, Smuggler's Notch being the most famous. It's closed in winter, just impossible to plow... plus the 10th Mtn Division trains up there in winter. (When we say CLOSED, we mean CLOSED! says the guys with the howitzer.)
On Smuggler's Notch, there are several signs that tractor-trailers are prohibited. A few truckers try to go through anyway. They get stuck (3 that I heard of last year), the road has to be shut down for hours while they try to get heavyduty tow equipment up there. Usually ends with some damage to the truck and a heavy fine. Driving skills don't matter up there, the only skills that matter are READING skills, because there just physically isn't enough room for a long truck to fit between the boulders on the curve. It's not even 2 lanes for small cars. Tour busses get stuck there too, trucks with landscape trailers, etc. I talked to one idiot who insisted he was going to go through with his full-length crew-cab pickup truck and a very long travel-trailer. I said, "No, you won't." He says, "Oh yes I will, I can go anywhere I want." I said, "Then tell me the time you're planning to go through, so I can call up and have the tow trucks ready for you." That finally got his attention!
Blue ice is so cool, I see some not far from here sometimes, but never as bright blue as that. One of the best parts of winter.

Those aren't carpenter squares (but they sure look like them LOL). Those are travel points on whatever mapping service shot the images. I just stole the picture from Google. I had to pull up Smuggler's Notch to take a look. What a pretty road. I can see why trucks get stuck! We have something in Tennessee called the 'Tail of the Dragon'. It is famous amongst motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts for its 318 curves in 11 miles. Local law enforcement and medics have a full time presence during the summer weekends due to the wrecks. And they try to maintain a reasonable speed limit, but it is a destination for people who like to push their skills to the limit. I've never taken the road because I wouldn't drive it fast and would just be in everyone's way. How fast can a Prius corner anyway? Local stores sell even maps that give the locations of police radar.

I've heard of the Tail of the Dragon. I don't think I'd want to drive it, though. Too many people these days don't drive when they are driving, they are just sitting in the driver's seat doing something else.
Smuggler's Notch is very pretty. Also quite steep in places, but only for short distances. The great thing is, the cliffs go up, not down, so you don't have to worry about plunging to your doom. (I'm not so keen on plunging nor doom.) The boulders are quite unforgiving, however. Some idiots were on Facebook after the 3rd truck got stuck, saying, why don't they just blow up the boulders and widen the road so big trucks and everybody can drive through it fast? DUH! If you want to drive fast, go around the other way and take the interstate!

Here is an old photo of the area near Menomonie I was talking about. Various colors of ice, depending on the composition of surrounding rocks:

How fast can a Prius corner anyway? I dunno, but not as fast as a Subaru. Whoop-de-do . . . He was getting that Subaru up to 170+ mph!!! Holy crap!!! Somehow I doubt that is a stock car LOL. Loved watching the overlay of his HR and respiration. They really picked up after his warm up lap. Mine might have flat lined, I think that would have scared me to death!

When we left there we went to Niagara Falls using nothing but back roads in the hills and mountains. That was one of the best trips we ever took. Staying in the mountains as much as we could took us into some real back country and poor areas..................MrP

My Forester has never gone that fast, 80 MPH Tops. My daughter had her Impreza more than that. Both were stock.
