I've had these for awhile and I keep wanting to do traditional domed cabs, but I am wondering if they should simply be flat lapped. Or, maybe bevel the edges and polish the top. They have the natural rind, but they do need some kind of polishing. What do y'all think? I am thinking that traditionally these are left flat. These are a great size for earrings.

I would vote for beveling the edges and polishing the top. (both sides)

if I had a handful I think that trying a cab would be fun to try but I agree with the others I'd play it safe.

Bevel or not, I'd say keep it flat. The straight lines in the pieces only invite such a finish, IMHO.

OK, just to be contrarian... Use your Al Sesona grinder to clean up the perimeter, then polish with genie, cut groove in perimeter and groove wrap with both sides flat polished.

That's actually a great idea! I think it might be thick enough to groove. eta- as a side note, I just got the 80 grit wheel from him today. It's gonna make things go MUCH quicker.

I have laps all the way down to 60 grit. Sadly, they're 8 inch to fit my faceting machine. I couldn't convince Al that he needs to make a machine with 8 inch laps.

rockjunquie, I just bought a set. I left the rind, and flat lapped. Kind of polish meets nature. Mine are bigger, pendant size. I will put them in prong settings. Vic

I'm still not sure about leaving it, but I'm leaning that way. I think mine are too thin to groove. I think I would prefer that, but I don't want to mess them up trying. Will you post a picture when you are finished?

My two cents, bevel the sides and do a low dome. Low dome is virtually a flat top but when executed properly, will give you your best polish.

Clean up both sides so they are flat, if not already, and then into the vibe! It'll leave the rind but put a polish on it all except the druzy.
