Took a polish, but not happy with them.

Look good to me! I’d say they are winners😀
Most are very shiny! I’d put them in flower pots to conserve moisture.

I hate when that happens. I've come to expect it from the Lavic...not sure what some of the other stuff is. The finish is very nice on those, and you clearly spent alot of time shaping them well. Pits and cracks are always kind of the unknown quantity. I've got stuff in coarse right now that I think is going to be pretty crappy. Lots of pits and fractures. I threw in a bunch of AZ pet wood that was collected at Dobell's and new flakes and fractures constantly appear. Aside from the stuff you can't control, you did nicely with those.

What’s GIGO?

Garbage in, garbage out. It's a term that originally applied to computers/computer science as it related to (good) output being contingent on good data input or programming.

Thanks. I’m familiar with garbage in/garbage out, but GIGO new to me. I’ll keep my ears open for GIGO.

What stage did you start them in a vibe.....or was it all rotary...?
I'm starting to believe that all tumbled Lavic that is Chalcedony embedded will suffer undercutting, pitting and leach line fractures......even if disc prepped prior to tumble like I've been doing. The only material that finishes silky smooth (at least for me), has been the orange and solid red/brown jasper. When I trial ran a bunch in the rotary (as we've discussed previously), through the first three stages 60/90/ 120/220 and 600, I then decided to go to the vibe and only rotary 60/90.........It made a bit of difference since the fractures and pitting didn't start showing up until the 600 Sic cycle.......that's with disc prep first.
Regardless, your's took to an excellent shine, and thanks to you Jean, I'll never have to ask "what's that red/brown/orange Chalcedony embedded stone" again....!
Out of curiosity, wonder if anyone has had success cabbing a piece of this "embedded" stuff into a marketable show piece......and what rate of success was had (1 in 10 pieces, ect.)............?
Still one of my favorites.....and bonus points for "find, grind and finish".......Pick to Polish is the most rewarding aspect, IMHO......!

Awesome shine on those . Yeah , pits are the pits . Sometimes running in low gear helps with problem rocks . Might need a day or so longer in polish .

Take a look at this post from a thread that Bluesky78987 created as a tutorial for a bracelet made out of Lavic: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/923766/threadThere are photos of about 9 cabs in the post specifically, but she had to go through quite a few to get pieces to her liking.

When did mother nature say anything will be perfect all the time? I like 'em, especially the ones with red in them.

Thanks....... seems lots of effort went into Bluesky's selection and cabbing......the finished products were fantastic. The proper tools, experience and craftsmanship tamed that Lavic.......I'm nowhere near that ability, but at least now I know it can be accomplished.......there's still hope.

The top pic reminds me a lot of the beach rocks I end up finding, oddly enough.
They have the same texture. I wish I knew enough to suggest a 'fix', but on some, I actually find I like the texture. If it's fairly regular, the shiny/matte contrast is pretty cool unto itself if they're cleaned out really well, which these are -- so it's more like 'different features' than 'problem'.
I love the one with the fossil shell spirals. That's really amazing, vug or no.

Tough material to get perfect. I have been checking my tumbles. Noticing new holes even in pre-polish and polish stages. Not minding holes/vugs with crystals in them. The others I could do with out. I think yours look very nice.

I was disappointed because of all the time that went into the batch, and having all the cracks/breaks show up. Didn't seem like the last batch was so bad.
Didn't post all the pics yesterday. The rest of the Flickr album here link .
surreality - Is this the fossil you liked?
They are fusulinids. Lots of fossils to be found out at Ocotillo Wells.
Not a shell in the sense of what you normally think of, as this is a single celled organism. The shell is a test (no, not that kind of test!), like the outer coating of a diatom.
Still fighting this cold, but need to get out there and walk today. Will answer everyone's questions when I get back.
Thanks for your interest. Jean

Nice tumble I think the rocks look pretty good.
Some materials fall into the "is what it is" category. Never rolled Lavic but have heard it is hard to get the perfect tumble out of it.
I have literally, in the past, tumbled pieces for a year trying to get perfection. These days I decide to accept as is or cull. "Lowered expectations" have taken away a lot of frustrations for me.

Still not to bad.... Hand them out to the local kids that love rocks.. Thanks, Mike.
No longer doing the club thing, meetings or shows. Have become a rock hermit, lol.
The only type of kids I see these days are more likely to have the rocks thrown at them (can you relate, mohs? ), then to be handed them.
Getting grumpy in my old age, lol.
