Photo 1 is somebody's discarded tumble I found in a pile on the side of the road. They were fairly shiny in places but were too large (3 to 4 inches) and had large pits and cracks so I broke them up and did some forming with my tile saw. They came out pretty good...I'm quite pleased and I still got some left I'm looking forward to tumbling. Photo 2 is some quartz (mostly) from around here...they came out petty good too... Photo 3 is local granite and whatnot that shines OK where it's not undercut...the color and patterns compel me to pick them up but overall they're less pleasing to the eye when tumbled with all the undercutting...I think I'm going give up on them... 1 2 3

You got a really nice shine on the first two sets. Those problem stones often do look good before tumbling, it's so tempting to give them a try. I figure everyone has to give it a go at least once. Thanks for sharing the pics.

The quartz is lovely. Not always easy to get such a nice tumble. Funny to find a discarded tumble on the side of the road. Makes you wonder about the story.

Thanks and yes I was wondering the same...I do a lot of bicycling and walking and I've come across two other discarded tumbles but they were in the back alley. This one was on the side of a fairly busy road which adds to the mystery...it's almost like it was an impulse by someone but that's just a guess. Whatever the story their loss is my gain

Thanks for sharing the pics. Thanks. I've been stockpiling way too many rocks...I walk a lot and almost always return home with a pocket full so when I recently realized there's lots of butterscotch jasper around which shines up a lot better than the granite the compulsion to pick up granite has fallen off....... still gonna have too many rocks, just different ones

Good job on those. But the discarded rocks you got from the side of the road? They just don't seem as appealing.

I remember your initial post about finding the tumbles on the road. Do not give up on the Granite. It takes some work, but can make some great cabs and tumbles. You did great for an initial batch.

Totally agree but for now I'm focused on getting my shine recipe better and every batch is a little better all due to the collective knowledge in here as I "lurk and learn"

Thanks...If I ever get into cabs I'll maybe reconsider the granite, meanwhile the granite I've collected/stoclpiled is in my yard doing duty as flower bed borders. For now the mission is to get my shine skills better...
