Nice mix of rocks. Should be some great batches. Ceramics in stage one? Chuck That was going to be my comment, Ceramics in 30 SiC stage? For me I would only use ceramics/pea gravel in coarse if I was tumbling slabs or pre-forms to keep the flats from sticking together. Otherwise I save the ceramics/pea gravel for pre-polish and polish in the case of clear quartz and Obsidian, or polish for everything else. On the other hand there is no absolute "right" or "wrong" way in tumbling, many paths to get to nice tumbles. ( unless you are going to dump a spoonful of 30 SiC in the polish stage! Good luck, they are looking good.

Planning ahead for the polish stages I wanted some ceramics already dull & burnished and ready for later polish stages I added the ceramics in the last clean out with fresh grit. Wished I would have thought about it earlier when the rocks were more jagged. Good Job you didn't disappoint I got caught! I was waiting for the question. I have 10lbs ea of the two ceramic sizes's coming in the mail tomorrow all the tumblers have ran long enough that they have their own ceramics.

I keep looking at the 40T and sighing to myself about the budget. The place we went today (since it was raining in beach land) had some larger pieces we couldn't resist, and I already have some that are pushing the top end of what I can do with the 12lb Lortone barrels.
Do you know what the max recommended rock size is on it?
Much as I know I could probably afford a pick and a sledge to split 'em, wellllllll... they're pretty as big rocks! Dangit. They'd just literally fill half one of the Lortone 12lb barrels... each. :/ Thinking that'd not be so great, to put it mildly!

Do you know what the max recommended rock size is on it? The Barrel mouth size is 12" so I would say Easily (3) 6" rocks would be okay maybe a couple 8" inchers but that would be about it you would want to put a bunch of smaller media wit it tho. The T90 Barrel will go right on the machine and it has a 15" mouth size on that Barrel. Here is a link to it, therockshed.com/tumbler5.html#Large

There's no way I could handle the large one -- I could mayyyyyyyyybe wrangle the 40lb once a week, but there's no chance on the 90! Some of the stuff we found at the more local site was averaging much larger than we're used to -- 6 inchers sounds about right -- so it has me hmmmmmming. (It would also mean needing a bigger vibe, though, too, and... ugh.)

Yeah Spinning A Rock that big will require a large Vibe. I have the Ultra Vibe 18 but think I would need the BIG BOY Ultra vibe 45 to Shake -N- Bake that size Rock.

Here is a link to it, therockshed.com/tumbler5.html#LargeI would be careful with more than one "large" rock in a tumbler at a time. even with smaller media, they are eventually going to "fight", and the resulting impact spots may not be pretty. There also the chance, depending on the shape, that more than one "large" rock in a barrel could create a jam and reduce any grinding action significantly. This is the largest rock I have tumbled to date. It measures 6" X 4.5" X 2.5". The largest rocks in the barrel with it were about 1.5" X 1.5 inches and most were smaller. It did come out pretty good. It was run in a 15 pound rotary and the polished in the UV-18.
