Looks like the serpentine we have around here. Doesn't serpentine typically polish much better than that one? That heart is full of orange peel typical of jade.

tmjacks0n the most reliable way to know if it is jade or serpentine is to conduct a specific gravity test with a digital scale. Edited to add: Google says the specific gravity of nephrite jade ranges from 2.9 - 3.01 while serpentine ranges from 2.5 - 2.6 Here is a piece of serpentine I cut that appears black until light is shined through. This piece was also loaded with metallic inclusions.

I have a lot of Wyoming nephrite that looks just like that. It could be serpentine, but judging from the orange peel on the polish I'd lean toward nephrite jade. Serpentine polishes easier. Nice stone you have there.
