For the experienced ones....
Do textured barrels really help prevent slipping?
My CE tumbler has textured barrels. They are a pain to clean. I often have to push them to get them rolling. Once rolling, they are fine. My Thumlers has smooth barrels. Easy to clean, but have noticed they are more apt to slip or stop rolling. Still using the 1970's Skilcraft 1 lb barrel, which is smooth. No problems with that.
The other day I had one CE and one Thumlers barrel going in the CE tumbler. The CE barrel was rolling fine, but the Thumlers had stopped. Both barrels were loaded to about the same weight, less in the Thumlers.
I removed both barrels, cleaned the rollers/bearings and applied new oil to the bearings. Put the CE barrel back on and let it run for about 30 minutes. Then added the Thumlers. No problems since.
The O ring style replacement belt for my CE tumbler is working great. Since I often have one barrel rolling and the other stopped, I do not think the problem is belt tension.
Thoughts? Thanks.

I had Lortone barrels need a push to start or they have stopped on their own. Usually a good cleaning on the outside of the barrel fixes the problem.

Shiny Barrels will slip. Use Sandpaper to rough-up the surface some.
And don't forget to oil the bearings at the ends of the rollers . . .

Yes, I clean off the old oil and apply new weekly.
