I way of a quick introduction, I am from north central Iowa. My name is Bill Jeffries, my handle is Bandmenter. I came here for some advice and therapy as you see I clearly have an addiction to rocks. Rocks are very much like M&M's, a hard candy shell with all the goodness inside. Have you ever been able to eat just one M&M, not likely, hence the addiction.
Living here in north central Iowa has it's draw backs, the main one being that out bedrock is limestone and sandstone. Not a very pretty rock and it would be just a dull if you tried to polish it. I'm really not trying to raise anyone's dander because I also know that limestone allows for the worlds prettiest Geodes. The very best thing about north central Iowa is the fact that the glaciers plowed their way through this little piece of heaven. In it's wake it littered the entire area with glacier candy, there goes that M&M reference again.
Rock picking is relatively easy here in the mid west as the farmers love to help us out. They drive around in the fields in the spring and pluck every rock they can find and nicely deposit them along the fence lines, how kind of them. If you approach them very sincerely, letting them know that you collect rocks and inform them that you would love to help them remove some of their rocks from their fence line, most are really very agreeable to the opportunity. I've had several that have offered to get the tractor out if I would back in my Volkswagen Beetle, they would be only to happy to load me up. I have not taken anyone up on this offer as of yet as the hatchback would be in the way. So I head to the fence line with a couple of 2 gallon buckets and start sorting through the glacier candy. I always come away with something cool, wondering which part of Canada or Minnesota these trophies came from.
I build a lot of what I use around my shop, I am readying to start a flat lap build. I will post pictures as I progress.
Thanks for having me in this fantastic forum and I hope to be reading many posts as well as adding to the conversation.
