I'm an old hand at tumbling but new to cabbing. From research I've done here, got myself a Hi-Tech 10" slant cabber to start. Works well and grinding down rocks has become addictive. Already shaped a few practice rocks and they look OK. I ordered some new disks and they are aluminum plate. The ones that came with the cabber, stick on an acrylic backing plate. Do I need to back up the aluminum? They seem pretty sturdy to me and I'd think could stand up on their own, ?

That's probably a good question to ask the manufacturer. I'm not sure, but those metal backers may be too heavy for your motor. My flat lap has acrylic backers. (different brand)

The plates weigh about the same and being the inpatient person I am, tried it. The only problem was the plate is thinner than the acrylic, so I need a shorter screw to clamp it down. Once I figured that out everything went smoothly, seems to work just fine, I guess until it doesn't. But for now, I'm good.

I use a master lap under the metal toppers on my flat lap. It heavy and doesn't bog down the motor at all. I have an old Hi-Tech - not a slant lap.
Just adding a an extra washer or two between the lap and the nut works, too.
