My steel hopper rusts quickly and stains white AO pre-polish and AO polish brown. No complaints about the brown stained AO since it doesn't stain tumbles and has no negative effects on final polish. A tiny amount of rust does the staining. Better brown than white IMO since most rocks are dark and the brown stained AO does not show so much. Since using sugar instead of Borax for slurry thickener wedged AO and Borax has not been an issue because the sugar dissolves so well. Quotes below from this article - www.ganoksin.com/article/buffing-and-polishing-materials/"Ferric oxide (Iron oxide) Very little abrasive effect. When pulverized, washed and decanted, it is turned into crocus or red rouge for cutting and Polishing metal." "Red Rouge A product traditionally made of iron oxide, pulverized and graded, used in jewelry work. Darker-colored, coarser grains are called crocus and are used for grinding. The finer grains are called rouge (French for “red”) and are used for polishing steel and precious metals. It is the finest of all rouges. Rouge is often mixed with a binder and caked into a bar form for easy application to a buffing wheel."
