Handy for glass and obsidian. Allows visual warning that gas pressure is rising. This cap is a softer rubber and can expand about 3 times more than bulge in photo. Best to run double clamps with high expansion situations. This was the easiest HDPE barrel to weld together. Simply weld butt cap to 6" to 4" reducer for a 12 pound barrel. And cut off the overly long 4 inch snoot if desired. It extended out 5 inches, cut back to 2 inches.

I know where a few of those are on Ft Benning. Just have to find the ones that are bolted and not welded to the ground supports. They might even be empty. Would be awesome for a tumbler...... Until you have to pick it up to dump it.

Could cause excessive gas pressure Ed. Can shape rocks in a nanosecond !

Those fernco caps can hold back an amazing amount of pressure...until they can't. I was on a jobsite about 25 years ago when a plumber was pressure testing a 4" main and took a shortcut and use a fernco cap. His second mistake was being on a ladder in the direct line of fire of said cap. Third mistake was not paying attention. Long story short- took a direct blow from the projectile, knocking him off a twelve foot stepladder. To add a little insult to injury he was getting drenched as he lay on the floor writhing in pain. He ended up missing a couple of weeks of work and was lucky it wasn't much worse. Pressure is no joke.
All that being said, you sure could have some fun. With all of the glass you have done have you ever let it build up intentionally to shoot them off? Sounds like a great video!

Have you all seen how destructive a ping pong ball can be without air to slow it down.

Larger barrel I saw this just this week. Probably the prototype in a museum in Oak Ridge TN

With all of the glass you have done have you ever let it build up intentionally to shoot them off? Sounds like a great video! Only due to neglect. The 4 inch cap has bulged out to near 2 inches. That is a bomb. Yes video worthy. 100 feet in the air easily. On several occasions the band clamp had to be loosened with the bulging cap aimed in the direction of a wall to avoid losing the cap and clamps. Preferably a wall that can get slurry on it. In the summer the rotary is often moved to a greenhouse. On one of those occasions the cap blasted off so fast it blew thru the plastic greenhouse cover. Solution was to push down on cap and loosen clamp slowly at same time till the gas pressure slowly leaks out. The 8 inch pipe barrels have 6 inch rubber caps. They have much more volume to bulge out and rarely have such high pressure levels. And the big 6 inch access hole is nice. But the 6 inch HPDE barrels seem to work best with tumble size rocks. Next time I would like to look for a 6 inch to 5 inch HPDE reducer instead of 6x4 for a larger 5 inch cap. No idea if 5 inch HPDE pipes even exist. 5 inches = ~ 125mm The size of the HDPE pipes per mm is: 16 mm HDPE pipe, 20 mm HDPE pipe, 25 mm HDPE pipe, 32 mm HDPE pipe, 40 mm HDPE pipe, 50 mm HDPE pipe, 63 mm HDPE pipe, 75 mm HDPE pipe, 90 mm HDPE pipe, 110 mm HDPE pipe, 125 mm HDPE pipe, 140 mm HDPE pipe, 160 mm HDPE pipe, 180 mm HDPE pipe, 200 mm HDPE pipe, 225 mm HDPE pipe, 250 mm HDPE pipe, 280 mm HDPE pipe
