Well, it happened again! My husband and I went to pick up his daughter from school and got there way too early, so we went to this little shack down the road we had seen that just said "Rocks" on the sign. When we went in there was a young girl behind the counter and I asked if they sold rocks by the pound. She said her grandpa did, when he was alive, but now they sold beads and things he created. Said her grandma might know more and she should be right back. We started looking around this VERY small shop and in a dusty corner I noticed some things. I found a chuck of picture jasper, leapard skin jasper and crazy lace agate under some, well, junk. turned out to be 2 lbls total. Then I got really nosey when I found some coffee cans. I popped the lid on one and it was full of raw rubies. I'm not talking corundum, pink to blood red raw rubies. Not facet quality, but a good tumbling batch. I wispered to my husband "I think I found the mother load". and handed the can to him. Of course, he made a big fuss and I was trying to calm him down so they wouldn't stick us but in his excitement he didn't get it. We had to go get his daughter, but we went back and got 3 lbs of raw rubies and 2 lbs of great rock for $25.00. Grandma was there, so I had to do some dealing. Anyway, I'm going to be running these rubies in my only tumbler for who knows how long now, but my husband is very excited about it. Maybe now I can cocentrate on my jewlery while these tumble. Wish me Luck?

If these tumble well, I do plan on making some jewlery with them. That's hubby's plan anyway (with dollar signs in his eyes). I gotta get a second tumbler, but we're about to go on vacation and spend way too much money so it will have to wait. I did order an extra bowl (the patched one probably won't hold under the rubies) and 5# of 120/220. This is gonna take awhile and wash and recharge so much. Thanks

Moonstone, Rough rubies and sapphires just kinda look like, well, rocks. They are all corundom, the only difference is the color. If it's pink to red, it's a ruby. Everything else are saphire, even if theyre not blue. They feel much heavier than regular rock the same size would, like lead shot. The reason we were so taken with these is they were not just gun metal grey or black, like so many are. They all have a red to pink tone, leading me to believe I could get somewhere with most of them. But it takes a LOOOONNNGG time, even in a vibe. This will be a test of my patience, definately. I've heard it can take months to finish them, but I think I can make some awesome free form jewlery with them ;D

Thanks for your excellent explanation Cher ;D! Even if they take a longer time to tumble I think they are great to have. I will start looking for rocks that feel much heavier than regular rocks to see if I could find some, who knows! Thanks once more ;D ;D ;D
