I can tell ya. It’s all congelton hollow limbcast out of Paulina OR. That makes sense, I was looking at the white rind and couldn’t place it, that’s one of my sons favorite places to rockhound. It’s a great place. My grandpa as a young man used to work with horses on ranches out there. So when was out and about, you could imagine him and the other old timers were picking up a lot of good stuff out there.

Some amazing limbcasts still come out of that place, saw one with a hollow amethyst crystal core that blew my mind. We did pretty well after some storm water runoff from the road cut into the hillsides and exposed some goodies, lucky timing. Smart man. Best time to hit it. Early spring chasing the runoff.

I could look at iris gates all day. Those are probably the best pieces I have ever seen. Grandpa was a wise man to save those beauties!

Crazy thing is, I found another box of maybe 200+ that still need a polish on them. hummingbirdstones Now that I remembered. here’s a sample of some of the nicer stuff from inside the house.

realrockhound What is the thickness of the slabs? I have a friend who has been collecting in the Paulina area for decades and when I showed him these pieces he showed up with a box of beautiful limb casts wanting to see if any would show the iris effect. It seems like fortification is a constant in these pieces and may be a requirement for the light show...Thanks!

And yes, the key is the fortifications. You have even a higher chance of getting iris if it has crystallization in the center. At least from my experience.

stonemon also let him know, that if he’s ever picked up any of those geods out in the Paulina area, those will include iris as well. I’ve been collecting a ton recently. They have a high chance of producing some good iris. Same deal, if they have crystals in the middle, then you’ll most likely get iris. I’ll post some pics of the material I’m talking about later so others can see what I’m talking about.
