ugh! we get starlings in the chimney every spring, dang things. we had a bat in there one year too. thankfully we've never had a squirrel.....whatever hole or loose edge the birds and bats get into, it's not big enough for a squirrel.....yet. we get squirrels in the garage, which is annoying. rats with pretty tails if you ask me!

yeh, mine need total overhauls sometimes.....replacing the motors isn't fun but doable. none of mine run anymore with the covers on, tho.....they get dirty fast that way, but they keep turning!

superb stones and groove wraps. i second what Sands said, i love the way the wire doesn't hide the beauty of the stones.

i've never been able to get much of a shine with cerium oxide, perhaps i wasn't using the right kind? anyway, i've tried all the expensive ones (tin oxide, etc.) and finally settled on a fairly inexpensive (compared to others) polish called CPP, available at Alpha Supply company. Unfortunatley, their websitte has been down for some time now. you can also get it at Mama's Minerals: www.mamasminerals.com/page/MM/PROD/EQT-CPPPOit is Aluminum Oxide, btw, it works for me. KD

we also have a rather large local Amish population. in addition, we have a large native american casino in the area. i don't see whay any religious/cultural affiliation should be exempt from taxes. everyone should have to follow the same rules, including the humane treatment of animals.
my 2 cents,

although there are some rocks that will never acquire a shine no matter how long you leave them in polish, i have found that the longer you roll'em in polish, the better shine you are going to achieve. i've been known to leave that polish barrel turning for a month or so. even longer (mainly due to laziness!).

i raised ducks for several years, don't know how much different they are to chickens. here in Central NY you have to have a place to keep them indoors for the winter. but they sure made great animated lawn ornaments during the spring, summer and fall months. for the most part, we had Muscovy ducks and while they loved me, they'd chase after anyone else that tried to be in the yard, lol. hence our friends used to call them the "Devil Ducks from Hell".
they did poop a lot, tho! curious creatures that loved to help you with any gardening project, the female birds were much better flyers than the males, but they all used to end up on the roof right over the bedroom in the mornings.
the unfortunate problem with free range prey animals is there is a constant threat from predators. after a while i just couldn't take losing them to foxes and other critters anymore.
it was fun for a while tho! i have seen some recent news articles about urban chicken farming lately, must be you are on the cutting edge!
