The Sept 2010 Whittier rock club newsletter seems to give the location of the Paul Bunyan claim, i think it is 35.027264, -116.920157

I believe in the two man, or two vehicle rule, for going off the main roads. i have done Lavic and Hector Hills a few times. i would love to find one of the saginite locations by Calico.

I have been researching places to go in the Barstow area and with the Veteran's Day holiday next week I had a few days off so I took advantage of them. Some of the places look interesting from Google Maps, some are from old issues of Desert magazine. The schedule is flexible, PM me if interested.

Such beautiful, balanced work as always Tela. Plasma agate is one of my favorite materials. One of the ladies in my rock club wants me to organize a trip to go get some. i don't know that many of them are willing to do the 7-8 hr trip to get there. I would love to come back with a bucket of the stuff. I have a couple softball sized pieces and i use them sparingly for special projects like knife handles. I wish I had known about it when it was easier to get! It doesn't look in person the way it does in pictures. I never knew it was so dang pretty and deep. <My understanding is that Clear Creek area is open to collecting. Maybe it is just hard to find it on the other side of the country. I won't say it is common here is SoCal, but you can usually find some. Sometimes i wonder if it would be worth my while to load up a moving truck with West Coast rocks and do rock shows on the East Coast and Midwest.

I am very happy with my Ameritool swap top. Reasonable cost and easy to clean.

Very nice! barclay was that from the trip where we met you in the N.Cadys? No, this was from last year's trip. At our meeting this Friday we are going to plan our field trips for the next 6 months and the Cady's are one location i have not been since that field trip. Maybe if I am lucky I can get Shotgunner to lead us to those places again.

I love lavik for the things you just mentioned and the meaning of the 29 palms marine base there. Also don't like it because its a bit weak, fractures easily and harder to work than most. Its also a bit messy in coloring the oil. Still love it though.. Love all the jaspers too. Now I think about it.. I flat out love all rocks. Even your Az pet wood. Cliff
I like this one better..Marston Ranch opalized jasper. A whole lot !
View AttachmentView Attachment That is some wild color! i can see why you love it.

For those of you not familiar with SoCal one of our local jaspers is called Lavic Siding after the former small old West town of Lavic. It was even features on a Travel Channel show once. It has wonderfully vivid reds, oranges and yellows with occasional green and purple. The picture does not capture the depth that the clear quartz areas bring to the stone. I wish..... I'm stuck out here in Virginia. Tela for you I wouldn't mind throwing one of my chunks on the slab saw My squirrely rhyolite are the two cabs on the right side. They are a bit more pink in person. Lousy pictures though. IMG_20170827_144506533_HDR by Paul Clifford, on Flickr

This looks exactly like some of the "squirrely rhyolite" I picked up out at the Hauser Geode beds last Thanksgiving. Some of the pieces I picked up have some nice agate areas. If you would like some slabs they will be for sale at our club show in November I wish..... I'm stuck out here in Virginia. Tela for you I wouldn't mind throwing one of my chunks on the slab saw
