Obsidian is a great stone to cab. My advice would be to dry it completely after each grit, and check carefully for scratches at each stage. I call obsidian an "honest" stone because the scratches show up very clearly on the black surface. Not like those sneaky agates where you only notice the scratch after polishing it sometimes! Once all the "big looking" scratches are out, move to the next grit. You will soon be able to tell which ones are the new finer scratches from the current wheel and which are the "bigger" scratches from the prior wheel that you're trying to get out. Also, for polishing, my best results have been with diamond on felt, with a little squirt of silicone lube, and pressing hard enough to build up a little heat. My current setup of diamond on leather isn't creating as nice a polish, but still ok. I've never had obsidian break on the dop stick. Broseph82 is right though, on the trim saw, little shards go everywhere. You might want to wear nitrile gloves or something to avoid the little stabs (I sometimes do, sometimes don't). If you are cutting sheen obsidian, such as rainbow or silver/gold sheen, other things apply too regarding orientation and polishing.

Maybe they both get prizes, or we vote again on the two highest?

I like it very much too - nice job with the shape of the back - followed the stone but not tooooo exactly. Great job.

Where's the picture of all 6517 of them in a pile? EVEN THOUGH you denied me a group picture, they are all beautiful! I especially like the purple burrow creek that has the lightening bolt/ (or upside down tree) inside it.

Thanks for stepping up Glenn. I kind of like the poll results going up after I voted, just to be able to see whether other people agreed with me or not. But I'm ok with whatever method.

I'd love to see the KCC continue (even though I haven't entered many times) - and I like the idea of having some sort of (different) constraining factor each month, that kind of helps make it more of a skill based challenge and less of "who has the fanciest material".
Some ideas for themes/constraints might be things like:
- "Make the most beautiful cab out of the most humble stone." - Certain shape cabs - Certain common material only (i.e., "Jade month", "Obsidian month" "Tigereye month" "Brecciation month" etc) - (maybe one week but not all the time), "self collected stones". - "plain black stones". - "striped stones" - "chatoyant stones"
Maybe we could vote on the theme for each month - people like voting on things (at least I do - I looooove voting on things!).
Just some ideas.

Beautiful slice! I'd say grind off the edges and see how you like the preform of the freeform. If you don't like it, then start fiddling with templates to get ideas. I like Tela's idea, or some variation of it, because those horizontal markings leading up to the edge might end up detracting when the colored edge is ground off - hard to tell. Having the colored edge on there acts as a nice border.

Thanks y'all! (and nice pun Tom!) I'm trying to figure out what to do next. Maybe a bracelet of cabs from the same obsidian, I dunno.

Sonora Dendritic Rhyolite is one I think we could be spending a lot more for in the future. I want to get a few slabs of that.
