So years ago there was a person or two making cabochons from dyed and pressed tumbleweed. Why is this not being done anymore? The bricks, slabs, and cabochons were all gorgeous! Seemed to be really popular or a fad then quickly went away. I always tried to get me a brick, but of course the sellers were gate keeping and never released anything but finished cabs (to my knowledge anyway).

Never heard of tumbleweed cabs. Curious!
No photo on Google. Facebook has a reference, but no photo.

I recall the dried compressed biomass in resin stuff that was around for awhile, seemed there were several varieties and also spalted wood cabs. I think at least one of the creators has gone back to his day job career and no longer has the time to pursue their cabochon making, at least for the immediate future. I'm personally not a huge fan of most dyed things, but I certainly do want to do some experimentation into mixed materials creations. Too many projects to even think about adding it in right now though.
EDIT: Okay, nevermind. Not the same stuff at all. I wonder if actual cresote would do that, we have several bushes on the property that require plenty of trimming.

Makes me thing of the resin impregnated blanks that are popular with pen turners . Maybe I should try to make & market some out of locally harvested bamboo from my property

Chaparral (creosote bush) is extremely high in resin.

Figure out how to harvest the sap of bamboo and you can make vegetable opal from it.

I’ve seen the same thing done with heather in Scotland. The jewelry is for sale in many places (at least in the highlands). It is really beautiful. If I was home, I’d take a photo of a ring I have and post it.
