That is SO cool!! It would be SO awesome if that were gold in there! I took these pictures the other day at my father-in-law's. He found this piece around his farm. We do have Black Hills gold around the hills...and this sure as heck looks like gold in quartz to me!

Such things are possible. Just like winning lottery tickets... .
Seriously, there was exploration done around the big copper mine in Jerome, AZ where no copper was found. They struck gold instead. The Gold King Mine is still open as a tourist attraction there in Jerome. It's just a little farther up on the mountainside above the "Big Hole".
I was rubbing on the surface of a piece of Chrysocolla from an old collection one day when I hit a gold-colored speck that tested positive for gold.
If you don't have access to any other ways to test them, a prospector friend of ours just used a "pinpointer" metal detector to check rocks. I guess some of them are good enough to detect precious metals if there is enough there. I don't know the details - we've never done that.
Good luck to you both on getting a positive ID.

both pieces look like goldish smeary as posed to pyrite which in good sunlight you may be able to see the cubic structure

LOL hummingbirdstones2 - My wife has a metal detector and a pinpointer - both of which I got her for a present years ago...still not used! - so I may have to "borrow" it back from her and give that a shot. I do know they make different tones based on the type of metal. I'll have to check it against a gold ring to see if the tones match! Good idea!!

zsark72 have you tried pushing on the gold colored stuff with a straight pin? Gold is malleable and you should be able to “dent” it with a straight pin or needle pushed into it. This would best be observed under magnification.

In much of the gold country in California the gold bearing ores can be sulfides like marcasite or pyrite. Hornitos poppy jasper and Sierra brecciated jasper often contain gold bearing sulfide inclusions with enough gold that the included marcasite crystals do not oxidize. Gives some of the cabs a nice sparkle. I actually got permission to hunt poppies on one piece of private property which had some of this gold bearing jasper and made the owner a belt buckle from the material. Had a nice "stars in the purple sky" effect.
