Question for you guys? What’s the purpose of the quartz cap? Was the material too thin so you built it up, or does it magnify and add effect? Or does it have some other purpose? Just curious realrockhound All of the reasons you listed are good reasons to use a quartz cap. I would also consider using it when the material undercuts badly or takes a poor polish. It is also useful when softer material is to be set in a ring. Probably lots more reasons as well.

Realrockhound, sometimes the material is a plume that needs to be cut thin for best display and would break in a vibe tumbler without the cap.

Just curious I've only worked with a little dino bone but some that I've ground ended up with texture just like orange peel.

Rockoonz I love dino bone! I think you should get extra points for turning in 5 triangles with one cab!

Bravura Cabochon Designs now that's cool, and purple. Fully equilateral as well x5 and carving with the sides of wheels ain't easy, if I do it's generally not intentional and you pulled it off flawlessly.

Bravura Cabochon Designs I never heard of a cab on cab. That's amazing! I can't imagine doing that on the wheels. The creativity really has stepped up on this one. I think it might be because of the simple theme. With just a shape there's a lot of variables.

Here is my first entry into a contest and also my first cab. I believe this is a piece of Picasso Marble, ID'd from this thread. It was a small chunk off I took off a couple weekends ago while cleaning up some other material and the only piece I felt comfortable making a triangle with. I've never tumbled this before and it lost most of the cleaner edges. I was trying to go for a live edge look, but didn't realize how much I would take off attempting the dome.
Thanks to jasoninsd for making a cab that I was often referencing.

Son Of Beach - Chad, that is seriously a great job on your first cabochon! You got a good curve on the dome...and way to go on wanting to keep that "live edge"! Watch out...you're gonna get hooked!

khara that is nice, and it is possible that it is from the TNT bed out in the general area where lucky strike is. Mt Hood club has that claim now and I've seen similar stuff.

realrockhound Thanks! It’s a pretty material. The agate has an icy blue hue to it and a hairline thin metallic looking sheen right along it’s perimeter.

Rockoonz Thanks for the info. That’s one of the familiar names I’ve heard for years. Interesting that a club now has the claim. It’s pretty and worked up well. I’d look for more of it. 👍

I may wander up there in June when we head up there.

But remember, all prineville collecting has to be inspected by me. It’s the law. Remember… I don’t make the laws, I just help enforce them.
