Hello everyone! JCOOKS here, the real name is Jeremy. My wife and I have been rockhounding for a couple years now, it started with beachcombing and has of course evolved into days long trips all around Northern California and Oregon looking for all kinds of awesome minerals. Naturally, this has also evolved into lapidary work as well, which is how I found this site.
Currently have a new 8" slant lap on the way, the next purchase will be a 10" trim/slab saw, and the thing I really need is a 24" slab saw, which I'm looking to build. We have a ton of large jasper cobble that we need to start working on once I build a big saw. In the meanwhile I'll be starting with the smaller stuff.
Looking forward to being a part of this community!

Hi Jeremy. Welcome from Central California. Good luck on your saw search. I'm in search of a 14 or 16. The good news is it seemed like there was hardly anything available used for a while and now the market is coming back. I'm seeing more used saws for sale lately. What kinds of jasper have you collected?

Thank you for the welcome everyone! Hi Jeremy. Welcome from Central California. Good luck on your saw search. I'm in search of a 14 or 16. The good news is it seemed like there was hardly anything available used for a while and now the market is coming back. I'm seeing more used saws for sale lately. What kinds of jasper have you collected? Thank you! Yeah I'm just starting to see used ones coming up and I'm actually trying to buy a 10" with vise right now from up in Ashland. Hoping that works out so I can at least get started on some lapidary work. We have a ton of brecciated/agatized jaspers from all around the Franciscan coastal range and a decent amount of Snow Mountain orbicular jasper too. The problem is most of the good stuff is quite large - 15lbs+ and I really need a 24" to slab it out. Funds don't allow for a new one at this point haha. I'll have to figure out how to get pics uploaded on here and I'll post some!

Welcome from the great Pacific NW. I have family in Ashland, I hope your saw buy goes well. The Northern California, Southern Oregon area is beautiful rock hunting country. This is a great hobby for you and your wife to do together, as you know. Enjoy! This is a great place to learn!

I actually found a great deal on a 24 this summer. It works great but I have a lot of small material to cut and the large kerf of the saw blade will waste a lot of material on smaller rocks. I've been wacking up some big ones though!

I've been wacking up some big ones though! Nice! Yeah I have a 10" tile saw and have a MK-225 blade coming in for it (it's the "agate eater" blade with a different label and cheaper lol) so i'm going to start using that for now until I get a 10" slab/trim saw. The big one is gonna have to wait unfortunately. I'm not sure if I'm going to build a drop saw or fabricate an automatic horizontal one...the horizontal Covington style seems like it'll produce higher quality slabs and a longer cut but I don't really know yet
