Date: February 9. 2023 Weather: Bright sun, cloudless, 5°F Destination: Griesen, Neidernach, Sunkenlaine / Garmisch-PartenkirchenThe forecast was promising a beautiful, sunny day - so I decided to check out another of the small streams leading into river Neidernach. Exiting my car at the small parking spot at Griesen, I immediately felt a substantial drop in temperature compared to my departure in Munich. This would be fun taking pictures... (without gloves). And it would be. The walk along river Neidernach and then up stream Sunkenlaine was fantastic. Peaceful, serene, great nature and sometimes downright magical once the sun began to break through the trees, turning the snowy ground into fields filled with little diamonds. The scenery was something to behold... as was the cold.
My fingers where turning blue and at some point I lost any feeling in my toes, but it was to enticing to move on... and take pictures. When the area opened up into a sun filled plateau I set down unter a tree, sipped some hot tea with honey and lemon and had a little snack.
The sun brought back life into my fingers and toes and a big smile onto my face.
After some rest I made my way back to river Neidernach and hunted for some stones. Actually found a beauty or two along the way and took some pictures of the artworks nature creates with ice, water and rock. Called it a day finally and had an easy and relaxed drive home. My coldest trip so far since I started venturing out again in April 2022 - and one of the best ones.
I love the combination of snow, serene nature and a bright, cloudless sky. Gabriel
p.s. Yes I NEED good new gloves that feel nice, keep the fingers warm AND enable me to operate my phone.
Any suggestions?

Beautiful scenery & interesting rocks. But if you're crazy enough to brave the elements you need better boots & gloves.
When I lived in NY state we always swore by Sorel boots, they have a re-moveable felt liner. They work.
And since touch screens don't work with gloves - you need
Fingerless gloves . They make them with a little flap that covers the end of your hand.
Stay warm & safe Gabriel -
thanks for a nice winter trip

True kinda. The boots are new and I like them just fine. Just not really made for those temperatures. I'll still check those boots you recommended - I need something warm for trips like this one.
Good one on the gloves a well. I'll check for a good, warm pair.
Shall stay warm and save enough for my existence not to be boring.
Have a great Week!

A wonderful trip. I really like the green and red rock.
I agree with Patty on the boots and gloves. I used to have a pair of fingerless gloves that had a mitten flap on them. Held in place with velcro. Best gloves ever. They were leather with fleece lining. The glove part fingers were fleece. If you can imagine what I am talking about.

Great trip report, Gabriel! Everything is so pretty with snow on it. 5 degrees is a little chilly, but if you're dressed for the weather, it's not too bad. Sorel boots are awesome. I used to wear them when I lived outside of Chicago and had to commute into the city for work. We had some really brutal winter weather and those boots kept my feet warm. There are gloves that have fingers with material on the tips that allow you to use a cell phone. I have a pair made by 180 degrees. The mitten/glove combo with the flip tops work pretty good, too. They also make heated gloves that are battery operated and rechargeable. I've never tried those so can't say how well they work. The other alternative is to use hand warmers like these: www.bandshoppe.com/shop/gloves/band-gloves/grabber-hand-warmers-glove-inserts-15726/no-color/ Love the video of the dangling ice. It looks like a crystal bell swinging from that branch.

Well... you and my mom seem to have the same taste. It's now sitting on her kitchen table and she always enjoys it "when the morning sun makes it sparkle". Gotta love your old folk.
Yes... getting proper gear. Promise.

After the turmoil in December where I missed plenty of opportunity to get out and enjoy the winter landscape... it is a real blessing to me being able to hear the snow crunching beneath my boots.
I'll get them gloves and boots! Promised.
Yea... it just looked to funny not to capture it.

Do they have that in a full body suit?? LOL

So which ones?
The first and second ones are the kind I'm familiar with. They have the re-moveable felt liner. The last one looks like it might be better for hiking, but I don't see a liner (and can only seem to get it to open in German ! ) So if that one had a liner, that might be better for hiking- the first 2 will keep your feet warmer through.
You do have a good hat, right ??
Patty... glad she's not having to worry about the cold right now.

I agree with liveoak. Either of first 2 boots would work. You need the better treads on the soles for traction on snow and ice so you don't slip and break your a$$! They will last you for years. I really like that hand warming pouch idea. Nice that it has a compartment to put your phone, keys, etc. and it's waterproof.

Although they are warm, I have to disagree about the pac boots for hiking. They get heavy - fast! Gabriel_GER, You mentioned you have boots already but they're not made for those temps. If there's room, layering polypropylene socks under quality wool socks will do wonders. The polypropylene wicks moisture away from your foot and wool even when wet retains I believe 40% of it's insulating value. If new boots are needed, I'd suggest going to a shoe store and talk to them about what you need. They should have insulated hikers or even hunting style boots which I think would suit this situation better.
