So, I found a Concreation last year while rock hounding, only reason I brought it home was it was weird that the outer shell broke off when I tossed it aside. The inner rock was red and very soft and easily scratched. I tossed it in with a tumble, honestly as a "slurry thickening rock" because it wasnt really anything special. Well it ran for the full tumble with some other suff, and now it isnt red anymore, and its MUCH harder. So my question, is how many layers of shells do concreations normally have? Also How common is a solid center core that will tumble? Its kinda a speckled grayish black now, looks pretty cool, Hoping it takes a shine later once i am done with stage one.

Think of a concretion at the equivalent to a jaw breaker. They have lost of layers. Since they tend to be sedimentary I would not tumble until I knew if it had any fossils in it. Some Cretaceous Period ones I have found have fossils in them, Mazon Creek (Pennsylvanian Period) concretions have leaf and animal fossils. etc Many are made of siderite and Pyrite. some are chert depends where you found it.

It was found in NW Ohio. I am not much into Fossils, so im not really worried there, Honestly I didnt expect it to do anything but dissolve and thicken the slurry considering it was super easy to scratch.
