ashley Hmm, I am a little surprised. Good to know. When I first had trim saw work demonstrated to me, the old timer doing it showed how he could touch the blade with his thumb. Granted he had heavily calloused fingers from years of rock work but also we all know those used trim saw blades aren’t near as sharp as a typical woodworking saw blade. So I guess I don’t worry a lot about it but it makes sense that it could grab the rock and do a pretty powerful throw just being subjected to the speed and revolutions of the blade. It does seem to me the type of saw jasoninsd is using could be a bit more risky. I’ve seen a number of you tubers using those tile saws and it does look like a good cost effective alternative but ya figuring out how to be safer would probably be smart. Or some sort of rock clamp…

Or some sort of rock clamp… Yeah...it wasn't the blade that cut me...it was the serrated edge of a rock that got me when the blade grabbed the rock and ripped it out of my hand...and through my finger. You're right, a clamp would be more safe...but I'd have to drill through the table...which can be done...but I haven't done it. I'm also a little impatient, so I can cut a slab and move to the next one in a matter of seconds. If I had a clamp, I'd have to unclamp the rock, move it over, make sure it's aligned, clamp the rock again, and then start the cut. The tile saw cuts rocks WAY faster than a lapidary saw...so all that time clamping and unclamping seems like it would take FOREVER! LOL

jasoninsd That’s crazy. Ya I hadn’t really thought about the rock cutting me, except for when I’ve been cutting obsidian. Glad you and Ashley brought it up actually. How big of a rock are you both hand holding to slab and are you able to get a pretty consistent 1/4” thick slab? I have only done this with super small pieces. Been meaning to try some bigger rocks. Maybe some gloves would be good.

Maybe some gloves would be good. I looked for "cut resistant" gloves at Menards (it's like a Home Depot). I only wear the right glove because that's the only one holding the rock...the left hand runs the saw. I cut close to 5" (plus sometimes) rocks. That's what the 10" can handle. If they're bigger than that, I'll hold the rock with both hands (in the air) and rotate it while it's being cut to allow the blade to get all the way through. I can get pretty straight cuts doing this...not for slabs though...only to cut the rock down to a more manageable size to cut each half "normally". I wasn't getting very consistently thick slabs when I first started...but I attached a larger piece of aluminum on the fence that came with the saw - and that helped tremendously. That way I can stabilize the rock better. For me, consistency comes from being able to get the rock stable against the side of the fence and the end of the table (think "L-shaped"). Once in awhile I'll put a shim under the rock to make sure it doesn't wobble during the cut as that's where the inconsistency in the cut comes from...the rock shifting during the cut.

I was cutting a slab. Which probably was my issue. I was trying to get a cut started and “lay a track” for the saw and it kicked on me. I have always been leery of cutting rocks freehand without a clamp. Will probably stay that way. Hope your finger is doing better. thats wise! Thanks!

jasoninsdI’m with you on the thought process of clamping. That is why sometimes I just use the trim saw by hand instead of using the other saw that has a clamp that self feeds, it just goes quicker.

If you don't have at least as many cuts as fingers per hand, you're not living! In all seriousness you do have to be pretty conscious around any power equipment, no matter how comfortable you are with it. My tile saw has not been kind to my hands.
