The wife and I are planning a trip down the Oregon coast. We’ll be stopping to look for agate on the way.
Any recommendations for which beaches to stop at?
sincerely,
Brent

That's a tough one, always takes a bit of luck, but I've found agates Seaside to Brookings i.e the entire coast. One of the best things is the amount of public beach access, Take a look at a road atlas and compare the number of parks, recreation spots etc to other states. I'm still finding new public access places decades on.
Lots of folks like the central area from Newport - Florence, I'm kinda partial to the Bandon/Port Orford/Gold Beach stretch... Lots of interesting spots, have fun.

It has been really rough and dangerous this winter. Be careful out there ! I'll post more later

Even when it's a quiet day on the coast, keep an occasional eye on the surf. There's always a slight chance for rogue waves.

After several decades of hounding on the beach in all sorts of inclement weather, I have learned to listen to the waves I always look up and over my shoulder every 30 seconds, to keep an eye out for off leash dogs and errant rockhounds trying to sneak up behind me.

Something else to be looking for on the Oregon coast is Pacific Picasso Jasper. It can get washed up on shore during strong storms. You might get lucky and find some like this...

Gary, this is a new one on me! Can you post a bigger picture so I can see it better? I have a bunch of it. I'm pretty sure it originated in CA- SoCal, I believe. I have several slabs. It's heavily fracture prone, but makes great cabs.

Here's a better photo of the Picasso Jasper slabs plus two more photos. The pair of slabs are about 4 inches long. I consider the blonde/yellowish with bluish-gray and black coloring to be the very best that it offers, especially when there's a riot of patterns:
Here's a dark slab: And here's the first Pacific Picasso that I ever found. Well, actually my wife found it and brought it to me. We lived in Oregon at the time and had taken the kids to Cannon Beach. While they were playing I was looking for rocks, even though my lapidary days were still 30 years away. I never knew what it was until I began cutting. I still have it:

opalpyrexia That dark slab is gorgeous. So the bottom pic is about what these look like as rough?

opalpyrexia That dark slab is gorgeous. So the bottom pic is about what these look like as rough? Some of it can, but other rough can look quite different. Here's dark piece that's waiting to be slabbed:
And here's one that is most likely to yield patterns in shades of tan, brown, and dark brown:

Thanks, Gary! It's beautiful material. I really like the dark slab.

There's a lot of slabs of that popping up on FB auctions in the last several weeks.

Newport and Lincoln City areas are good for hounding. As said watch the ocean at all times! Mother Nature RULES!

If you get to Bandon, go out to the lighthouse on the North side of the river, pet wood pieces on the beach at low tide, most aren't impressive when cut but good yard debri. There is a little track going East from the lighthouse area that goes back a short way. At low tide a fairly large flat opens up, we have found lots of wood, agate, and jaspers on that tide flat, mostly tumbler fodder but good stuff.
