Check this fossil insect image out, folks. It's a photograph courtesy the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, California, under terms of the Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. I edited and processed the image with photoshop. It's a fully three dimensional silicified adult midge (called scientifically Dasyhelea australis antiqua)--with excellently preserved eyes--sitting on a fully three dimensional silicified midge pupa (perhaps the very pupa from which the adult midge emerged), mysteriously holding something with its legs. The specimens came from a roughly 17 million year-old section of the middle Miocene Barstow Formation, Mojave Desert, California, dissolved out of a calcareous concretion with a diluted acid solution by a noted Barstow Formation fossil "bug" collector. See more of the remarkable three dimensional fossil arthropods from the Barstow Formation calcareous concretions, courtesy the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, over at my page: Fossil Insects and Arachnids from the Middle Miocene Barstow Formation, California .
