For anyone that hasn't got a chance to experience a solar eclipse, I highly recommend trying it. I made a road trip in 2017 tot he Illinois/Kentucky border and the experience is surreal. One of the most mind blowing parts for me was the shadows just before or after full eclipse. Anyone in the path of totality? Solar Eclipse Maps

Went through the 2017 one. Was at work on a mountain top and it was crazy with stupid people. Our district decided along with local sheriff to shut down the road. Due to steepness and crazy drivers. I was happy. Some people tried to get through but the LEO's came through and pushed them out. It was unreal, to see how fast it cooled off with the sun covered. Watched all the lower spots that people could drive up on and it was crazy was really worried about all the vehicles sitting on hot dry grass. We didn't get a fire one out of it thank goodness. Watched the shadow come and go. Glad I was able to be almost at the total darkness area.

Funny how the shadows in the first image look a lot like the bruising that plagues me on large tumbles... or maybe I am just obsessed... 🙂

We experienced the one in 2017, I guess that was the year. We used welding hoods to be able to look at it. It was pretty cool. We also took some pics. I’d have to dig for those.

If you miss next year’s total solar eclipse, you’ll have to wait 20 years for the next one to hit the US*, and that will only be visible in Montana and the Dakotas. This one’s a little easier on the eyes. * IOW, SOL for many of us. : )

It seems to defy logic.

hmmm, 4 corners isn't far away, wonder if it's too late to find a campsite nearby.

The leaves block the light waves, but the "holes" between leaves act like pin holes in shadow boxes, so those are millions of images of the sun as it eclipses.

I've reread this probably 10 times and I'm still not understanding. I need to do some more research I think, I don't understand why the light would be different than normal day light? It's light coming in direct, right?

I'm looking at camping/staying near Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge.
If anyone has any advice in the area, I would love to hear some tips.

Took the day off yesterday and drove down to Bend, OR which was an absolutely amazing drive. Pretty sure my gf needs a new left eye after I pointed in her face at so many different things to see Best looking and tasting baklava I've ever had. Hand made by a woman's greek monastery, a little place we happened upon. Smith Rock State Park, OR. We had tried to hit this when we did the rock show in Madras a few months ago, just didn't make the time. No regrets this time around, another beautiful spot to go check out.
After a couple of pints in Bend, we decided on the game plan. Get up stupid early (4) and drive down to Crater Lake to catch the sunrise at the very least, and likely bail early if the crowd got bad. I need to come back here and explore more, just not enough time this morning...
Knowing how crazy the traffic jams were at the eclipse in 2017, I figured it would get pretty nuts again. So, we stayed for about 15 mins after sunrise and retraced our step heading north towards the way we came.
There was a gnarly fog line that looked like a big, mystical lake up on the hill and from a distance, shoulda took a shot....
Anyway, we stopped back in a little town and kept trying to gauge a good roadside spot, but the clouds kept rolling in. We moved further up road, but it was a just a blanket of clouds. We got an occasional glimpse thru the clouds, but it was rather lackluster. C'est la vie
All and all a banger of a 48 hour trip, hit up Deschutes brewery and a pretty nice farmer's market in Vancouver, WA
We'll see if I can get luckier with the vantage next spring.
