I’ve recently picked it back up and would like to share my points to further gather tips to make better arrowheads and blades

I've been flintknapping for 30 years. Would be glad to give you some tips. Michael Sweet. I’m doing them from slabs as it’s less time consuming. After I get a chance to knap some more. I’ll reach out to you and post some. See what needs improvement

I do a little flint knapping also and personally know Michael (mjflinty). He is an archaeologist by profession and master knapper. Michael is exactly the one you need for any tips and pointers as he's taught many classes. Post photos of your work when you can.

Eventually the direction I’d like to go is percussion from a rough piece, but for now I feel the pressure flaking of slabs is a good place to start. I can get points made, but they are either pretty rough as far as I’m concerned or they end up breaking because how I’m applying pressure. I use a rubber hand block with a groove, but I think it has too much give and that’s what leading to breakage at times.

Yea I tried that too (using slabs) and broke a lot of points. Even very thin slabs just didn't work well for me. I had a local guy try to teach me how to use the bottoms of glass jars to "practice" pressure flaking. Never got the hang of it either. I have not even tried to knap in years.

When I cut slabs for knapping, I make triangular shapes and keep the max width around an 1 1/2 inches. I recommend obsidian as it's the least likely material to give you internal challenges (e.g. crystal pockets, fossils, hidden cracks, etc). I always start at the tip on a triangular preform. The first flake will provide a ridge for the next flake and each ridge will get progressively longer allowing the flakes to travel across the middle. I don't worry about cross-section till I get all the saw marks chipped off.

I think there’s a knap for that.

realrockhound I have some black flint collected in Texas. I have read it is good for knapping? I am happy to send you a small piece. You know good vibes/pay it forward. That said I don't know anything about knapping, so if a specific shape size is needed I'm not sure I'd have it - it is stuff I collected in the Llano river.

However I’m pretty set on material. Thank you for the generosity.
