I've been illuminating some chert I found in Girard, GA (nominally called Savannah River Agate) with a 365nm UV flashlight and a few pieces have very small very bright green dots about as big as a period. I've tried the google thing and if I did see the answer I did not recognize it. I took a picture but it looks like a 1965 photo of Pluto and is therefore worthless. Those little green dots are just gorgeous to look at and I'm very curious as to what the mineral might be.

Hey rickb, thanks for the information and all the wonderful photos of your finds. Hyalite Opa! How cool! It is so pretty to look at as it fluoresces. My wife wants to set up a display so that we can look at it whenever we want. She's been rather blase' about this hobby, but when I showed her what it looked like under UV she had a total attitude change.
I wonder if we went to the same place in Girard, a dirt road with a little stream about halfway down? Dumpsters at the turn off?
Thanks Again-

If you want to get her interested in the hobby, take her to JXR (Jacksons Crossroads) and look for some amethyst. Find a nice piece and have it cut and turned into a pendant or other piece of jewelry.

Rickb, I've read JXR was now closed to the public. I've got Diamond Hill on the itinerary to visit in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

RickB That material looks amazing! Do you have any pictures of polished material? Wow. Never cabbed any but I have tumbled some years ago - no photos. It is extremely hard and takes an excellent shine. Savannah River Agate/chert is what I first started knapping. I tried it raw, then heated some up and had better luck knapping it. It can be a beast to knap so when I switched over to some of the finer flints/cherts that most of the flint knappers work with my skills and quality of my work began to improve. I figured that if I had struggled with very tough material and was able to work it that I would be able to do better with better rock.

Never got into knapping myself (I can, hower, nap with the best) but I love to watch people do it.
