I have a A-R12 and would like another but not really wanting to spend the $200 plus on one. The thought I’m having is to try to make my own without reinventing the wheel. I was thinking to buy as many actual Thumler a-r12 parts that are available and basically make my own platform and drum and whatever else to complete it. Does this make sense or is this just foolishness?

Nothing to it, very practical, cheaper, and generally more durable. I've built a dozen of 'em, several different sizes. Pictures available on your request.

mikesgonepostal I have an AR12 that doesn't see any action. PM me if you are interested and maybe we can work something out. Just taking up closet space at this point....

Building your own is definitely far more economical. I have one that spins about 60 pounds at a shot (multiple 6 & 12 pound Lortone barrels) and it cost about $200 to build since I had an old motor. If you can find an old furnace or dryer motor those should be up to the task, depending on weight. Also the DIY forum has tons of good plans and links etc.

Since I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel I finally made my own copy of the A-R12. I picked up a used barrel so I just needed to make the tumbler.
I don’t want to have any problems from Thumler or from the moderators of this forum so before I go any further about how I made it I need to know if it’s ok for me to give details or photos. I’m not making them to sell but it is a copy and sharing what I did may be a problem.

So long as it's for home use and not something you are selling, it's legal.
