I found this little beauty while cleaning out the saw. I haven't seen this much variety of color in 2 inches of gem bone before. If anybody else has seen examples of this kind of coloration, I'd love to see pictures.

Sweet little slab! That could almost make you look forward to saw cleaning. Just curious, is it your saw?

If he's okay with it, my dealer friend from Laverkin Utah is here and I'll try to get a pic or two of his stuff that I can't afford. That is a very nice piece, should cut a nice cab.

rockbrainI purchased the saw (Lortone ST10) used a few months ago. It came complete with 1" of solidified silica sludge in the pan along with about a cup of oil. All the oilite bushings need replacement and the motor is running in the reverse direction, otherwise not in bad shape.

I have YET to find anything even close to good when cleaning out my saw! LOL Jason, don't feel bad. Yesterday I dropped a $20 in my saw and when I went to dig it out, I only found 2 nickels That dino bone is amazing! I have found bones while out rock hunting but never from dinosaurs, unfortunately. Even the dinosaurs knew Saskatchewan was boring as hell.

Most dinosaurs died and were munched up by their neighbors. Nothing left. Some laid on the surface and weathered away. Nothing left. A few were buried and ground water replaced parts with soft minerals like calcite. A very few were buried, followed by violent shock waves that shattered silica rocks and generated silica gel that groundwaters carried into the bone structure, replacing the soft minerals with bland agate. Even fewer contained colorful minerals. That is GEM BONE!

Do different dinosaurs or different periods influence the petrified qualities? Like if I wanted a really special dino bone would I target a certain species, region, or time period? Like AZ pet wood being uniquely colorful. This is my personal belief unrecognized be anyone else. 250 million years ago a comet or huge asteroid hit earth and broke up Pangaea. North America was shoved west as the Atlantic ocean was born. At the beginning of Triassic Time the Pacific Ocean crust had 4 choices. Buckle up ^ Buckle Down be subducted \ or obducted / onto the continent. Whatever happened, 225 mya a huge wave swept across Nevada, Utah, and into Arizona, ripping up trees and rocks, tumbling them all together, creating the Shinarump layer 10 million years later, it happened again! The Chinle was laid down. Geologists talk about Three Orogenies: That is when Dino bone and pet wood was agatized. There is a layer of colorful agate from Utah into Texas from that time period.

Where does most of the Dino bone people get come from? Like region? Like I have a big Dino bone laying out in the yard, curios where it came from and type of dino. Is it a pterodactyl drumstick or a velociraptor thigh bone 😂

From your photos I guess it was left over from Star Wars.

From your photos I guess it was left over from Star Wars. Here’s one that came from Luke skywalkers hand when it got cut off.

Great find. When a purchased a very dirty Lortone LU-6X Combo Unit a few years ago, there was a large slab of Gem Bone on it. I offered $5.00 for the slab. Best $5.00 I ever spent. Bad photos, but it is about 8" by 6".
