Looks like garnets from Lake Martin, Alabama.

rockjunquie. I figured the rounded edges were just worn. Not so! New to me. My garnets always have flat faces. Thanks.

The inclusions appear to be layered so I would guess those are iron concretions in basalt.

First Lake Superior Agates and now this. I got to start looking at landscape rock closer!

ashley my first take was it that rockjunquie was correct. But it is also possible that it is bauxite. I have seen some harder material that is similar. Have you checked mohs hardness of the host rock as well as the pisolites?

Lol, yes! It is very gratifying to self collect them, even if it is from landscape rock!

WAY COOL! I think Rockjunquiee is dead on. The lnk shows stones with a lighter ground color, though. I have some Lake Martin material (from near Montgomery, AL) and the almandine garnets are in bright green fuchsite. The garnets are not as densely packed as in this material, either.
