"Every day, hundreds of stone artifact enthusiasts around the world sit down and begin striking a stone with special tools attempting to craft the perfect arrowhead or knife. This craft is known as flintknapping, and for most, it is a skilled hobby or art form that was thought to occasionally require bandages or stitches. However, new research suggests flintknapping is far more dangerous than previously understood. And for early humans who were without the modern conveniences of hospitals, antibiotics, treated water and band-aids, a more severe cut could get infected and be life-threatening." phys.org/news/2023-05-dangers-early-humans-life-threatening-flintknapping.html

RickB, The risks were probably well worth it considering that without arrow and spear points those stone-age knappers risked starvation, and potential daily attacks from such critters as sabre-toothed tigers, dire wolves and cave bears, to mention a few. Had I lived during those times I'd have been knapping my fool head off!

Risk assessment and management are so different these days, seems like too many are happy to live in a risk free climate controlled little box. The Smithsonian institute had knappers and students hook up to brain monitors while doing their thing, they were surprised to discover that the area of the brain used was our speech center, leading them to surmise that tool making preceded spoken language, and that we developed language primarily as a survival mechanism. Listen to some teens nowadays and maybe the lack of struggle is the reason for that gibberish... JK

Great Article! I've cut fingers, hands, arm, leg, a sliver in my foot, piece hit my eye or protective glasses. Once I even knapped my flip phone which was in my left pocket. I've never told my wife that's why I had to replace that phone. That's when I started keeping the phone in my right pocket instead of my left. 1dave I cringed when I saw that .28% accidentally knapp their testicles.

Randy, there have been many times when I'm fixing to hit a rock when I think to myself "If this blade is going to snap, this is where it will happen". I will usually hit the rock anyway and quite a few times it will snap. Didn't snap this one, but could have - Was in the grocery store last week and realized that I had a flint knife I had just finished in my back pocket. Never broke it but I made sure my t-shirt covered it up as I was now wandering around in a store with a primitive weapon. That would have kicked my butt if security spotted the knife.

You could have just told them you were interviewing in the meat department and you thought it would be a good idea to bring your own "tools" in case you got an interview!

No Jase, they would probably think that I was a cereal killer.
