Leopard skin Jasper is not a real jasper. It is a weathered rhyolite with a high silica content. It has hard spots and soft spots so there are some spots that will not polish. but yes you can tumble it and get a good polish on the hard parts and the soft parts will be soft parts.

Looking at it I wondered if there might be some undercutting. Appreciate your answer!

There is a cute little rock/bead shop in my downtown. She had this beautiful piece of leopard skin jasper, so I bought it. I’ve never tumbled it before, but I sure am wowed by the pattern. Being a jasper, it should be easy to tumble, right? Is there anything in particular I need to know about tumbling this stone? Thanks! Good grief that’s a pretty rock! I’ve heard of leopard skin Jasper but did not realize it look like that. Wow!

Love the patterns/colors and what look like eyes. I’m not sure if that’s the right term for this stone, but wow, it’s sure purty!

You should be able to get a pretty fine shine on that beauty. I sure hope so! I did a clean-out yesterday and it’s looking good so far. *fingers crossed*

Because it's a Rhyolite, it's a coin toss as to whether it's going to take a "great" polish or not. I've worked (cabbed) some Leopard Skin which shined amazingly well...and others that wasn't as shiny. I've got my fingers crossed for you on yours...I love the patterns and looks of this material.

I do too! So far, I haven’t seen any undercutting. I’m doing a clean out today, so we’ll see what another 3 days in the Nat Geo have done. Man, I hope it turns out good!

michiganpebbler Where did you get that gorgeous leopard skin jasper?? We are absolutely amazed by it. I need to get some. I picked it up at the little rock shop downtown. She had never carried it before, and only had a few small pieces, plus the one I picked out. I scored on that one! lol I’m due to pop in and see what selection she’s got. If she has some, I’ll pick up a couple pieces and put them in the package with your Michigan rocks.
