Interesting! The "segmented" sections look like they're brecciated to me...

That is beautiful! To me it looks like a petrified root ball or tree knot, especially in the last two pictures. If it was palm wood, it would not have a grain whatsoever. There would be tubular structures, running up and down the length of the plant. Those usually are filled with chalcedony or something. Of course it could be a mash up of different petrified plants. I’ve seen those before and they’re kind of similar. But to me, it really does look like a rootball or knot. If you get a chance, post a picture of it wet. That is a fantastic find I think. And if you end up tumbling it, you must post pictures!

I'm not planning to tumble it as it is rather large, and being at the size limit of my ability to tumble, I'm worried I might screw up! So I might surface polish a part of it on my flat lap instead.

Wet pictures: Wow, I still think it’s what I said before. It seem like a really hard rock? Can you scratch it with a nail or knife? Does it feel like it has some weight to it or is it really like it? Honestly, I would tumble it, if it’s a hard rock that doesn’t scratch easy. I’d tumble it for two 8 day course cycles. I found one that is a bit similar to that one, except it’s mostly red Jasper. When I tumbled it, it turned out beautiful.

choochoorocksI still keep thinking back to this rock. I still think it would be an excellent rock to tumble. Every rock that looks similar that I’ve tumbled turned out really nice. I know you said it’s too big for your tumbler, how big exactly is it? Compared to say, a golf ball?

I agree. That blueish color looks similar to the blue-gray found in high grade Picasso.

I think it’s a petrified knot personally. I’ve seen wood that has the sand/dirt that’s been embedded/silicified into it when it formed. General location where you found it helps. I didn’t read previous comments if you already stated that.

It turned out beautiful. Oh, he found it on the northern California coast.

Yes, I found it on the San Mateo coast. Size-wise, it's maybe 5 golf balls in volume. I still don't plan to tumble it. I think it will probably fit in my Lot-O, but it has some deep holes. I think I'll either cut it, or polish part of the outside.
I just noticed yesterday that on one end there is a small area that is agatized that clearly shows what ought to be wood grains, so I do think it is wood in origin.
