I need some help with identification of this rock. I found it in Pawnee National Grasslands in Northeastern Colorado. My suspicion is tha it is a prairie agate or banded jasper, but that’s my uneducated guess. It has been through Stage 1 tumble once, I took this picture and returned it to the tumbler. Any help is appreciated! flic.kr/p/2oXpA7M

My uneducated guess would be a Jasper of some kind unless there is some translucency to it that I am not seeing. But a month ago I couldn't even tell the difference so I guess I have learned something this past month.

To me, that looks like a jasper. It has some awesome patterning!! Super nice find. I have found a large piece of jasper out here that had the same green, red, and yellow colors (the tones are spot on) as your piece.

Thanks Jason especially for the explanation on prairie “agates” not being true agates. I’ve come across some of your older posts about Railroad buttes and it’s whet my appetite to make a trip to the Black Hills. I only wished that I had pursued this hobby back in the 70’s when I lived in Custer, Hermosa and finally in Rapid for 4 years. There is so much of geological interest there but I was young, working, and interested in other things. One of my favorite places to take visitors was the November mine in the Needles/Harney Peak area. Maybe this fall I will make a trip there and to the Badlands. I digress, thank you for your input!

It looks similar to what we call jasp-agates when we find them, which are actually just chalcedony, Jasper, chert and quartz combinations. Those all stem from the same crystal (quartz) so can combine in some beautifully interesting rocks. Sometimes there’s even feldspar mixed in which makes really cool colors that pop.

I’m not able to post a picture of it wet right now. It’s back in the tumbler. When I clear out this weeks grit, I will take a picture of it wet and post it.
