I know you need a separate machine to make them, but what about just collecting? Something about the polished rocks being so round..... it just looks so cool! ;D I want to start collecting them. What are your opinions on spheres/eggs?

[glow=blue,2,300]Yo Jackson[/glow] You already know i'm into spheres! No one else does though. I'm thinking of buying a sphere machine (no big hurry just eventually) and working on learning how to make them. I know I'll need a saw to get it all shaped and ready for grinding, but i'll go into it slowly. I want to start a collection of them, and might have if we had won that "10 hematite sphere" auction. Well, maybe next time [glow=blue,2,300][/glow]

There's always the other ones, green moss agates, sodalite, tiger iron, and snowflake obsidian. We could still win those!

There are tutorials on sphere making machines on the internet. They really aren't that difficult. The one I saw is a frame of angle iron, welded, with two turning shafts at about 60 degrees. The stone is supported by rubber cups. The rubber cups and be made from uncured bubber, the shafts were 1" black pipe, and a dremel was used as a cutting head. I have seen another made from two counter rotating discs with a groove on the lower disc. The limits with that one would be having to change groove size for sphere size. Opening the distance from the cup version would allow for lager or smaller spheres. It looks easier than one would think, it seems just a question of wanting to follow through. Commercial sphere machines seem very costly and unable to do larger spheres.

Yeah the commercial machines are expensive, here is a link to a site that has some: www.cyberrockhound.com/spheremachine.htmIt would definately be a much better idea to build it yourself. I don't think I'd do that though, I'll probabaly just collect them.
