I would say it's definitely petrified plant matter, some cousin to Palm Wood. Petrified Cycad comes to mind. I searched for that and some of the images look identical, same structure.

Henry Thank you! That was what I was thinking, but I don’t know all the technical terms so well yet. I will research Cycad. I’m super excited about it and glad I broke it up. It should tumble beautifully, considering how hard it is.

Thanks y’all! Man, my great grandfather really had an eye for rocks. I still have at least a dozen more to dig up and go through…

It only shows me half, like literally the left half of the whole screen. I’m feeling might have to sign in and all that crap to see the whole thing. But I could tell that it appeared they were using it to make scales for a pocket knife? Which is really cool. That’s some thing I would love to do Sunday. I have extensively studied knife making and basic forging, but I’d be a fool to think my shoulder and neck could handle it. But someday, I will be the fool and try. Maybe I’ll just try to make tiny knives. Swing a tiny hammer on a tiny anvil. Yeah.

They look very nice. It seems they should tumble well.

This looks a lot like that rock I asked about recently, with its presence of both segmented/rectangular features and flowy/grainy lines!

This looks a lot like that rock I asked about recently, with its presence of both segmented/rectangular features and flowy/grainy lines! It could. Yours just hasn’t been as the weathered smooth. There’s other petrified plant matter than just wood. That’s why I was thinking yours could be some kind of root ball or burl. It could also be a mass of petrified reeds or palm. You’ll have to break it open to figure it out I think, or cut the end off. I was nervous when I broke mine up, but I’m really glad I did.

Nice!! I threw a chunk into the rebel 17 over a month ago and it is tumbling very well. It’s should look real good when done! I still have the rest of the rock left that I need to figure out what to do with now.

It's super cool! I feel a slanted cut will make the surface patterns more interesting but a perpendicular cut might make it possible to see through the tubes.

That’s a pretty cool page. I wonder if they mean Live Oak, Texas, which is just around the corner from here.

That’s cool, Live Oak is a small town literally smack dab in the middle of Northeast San Antonio. My cousin lives there. Takes about 20 minutes for me to get to his house. They have really good Christmas decorations in the neighborhood during the holidays. I wonder where people actually go. Rock hunting there. It’s only a few blocks practically. I thought it was all city…
