Hello my name is Zachary Sarkisian, and I recently moved into the Aptos area in Cali. I have heard of some of the more commonly known areas to hound around down south like big sur and clear creek, and I've heard there's poppy jasper around Morgan Hill but most of that is private. Is there anything in the actual bay area or is it all farther out in the other directions? I love to hound creeks for cobbles and things like that! I am assuming I'll have to drive out for the real good stuff though..

From where you are at there is great fun to be had rockhounding the coastline. There's interesting whale bone around the Capitola Beach area, and nice tumble sized agates in various beaches from Santa Cruz up to, and especially around, Pescadero. Any place you can find access to a beach with pebbles in that stretch you'll probably find interesting stuff.

Hey Zachary, welcome north! I think I'm going to do Clear Creek pretty soon. It's been too crazy hot. If you make a trip to Clear Creek keep in mind you need a permit to get in. They're only a few bucks and available online. You're limited to a few times a year because of asbestos exposure. Like Tommy said you have some great spots near you. I like hitting the beaches from San Simeon and south of there. That's a bit of a drive for you but I guess it's farther for me. I also frequent area 54 quite a bit. Hard to find really good cabbing material there but I have got some and some great yard rocks. Lot's of jaspers, chert, Lawsonite, there's supposed to be Bentonite, Jade and Jadeite too but I haven't found any of that. It's in the little Panoche Creek bed. It's about 1 1/2 hrs from Aptos Street BBQ.

Never heard of benitoite being there but I'll take that in mind and hope i get lucky. Thank you!

You can actually drive from Clear Creek to that area. I haven't done it. It's all dirt roads and you definitely need a 4x4. BTW, I guess you are in the Bay area but most up here would think of the San Francisco area when you say that. I'd much rather be where you're at! Also, the actual area 54 area is now no trespassing. I've been there several times since that's happened and never had an issue but I've been told it's not a good idea. The big pile and the little pile are still open, and there's an area just past 54 that's public access and it's all the same stuff.

I would recommend Goat Rock and Wrights beaches on the Sonoma Coast. There are wonderful beach finds to be had out there!

You should know about the Santa Clara Gem and Min Society annual show. Next one is in March 2024.
There are also periodic rock sales of donated rocks. None scheduled at the moment.
