Howdy, We are Mark and Kelly from Grand Haven, MI. I grew up with a full lapidary shop in the basement, and annual summer trips to Houghten / Hancock area in the UP for my father's rockhounding adventures. Retired a year or two back, and now Kelly has gotten the bug in a big way. We have combed many of the Southwest Michigan beaches, and have ambitions to head into the UP (Lake Superior) areas for rockhounding adventures in the Spring of 2024. One impediment for us is my lovely wife has mobility issues due to health problems. So any suggestions for places to rock hunt for those who are movement challenged would certainly be appreciated!
Thanks, ghMark

Welcome from Northern Arizona! If you haven't already, do look up our own Jugglerguy who is Michigan Rocks on YouTube. He has lots of videos of different areas he's hounded.

Welcome from Missouri, formerly from Michigan. You might look at Magnus Park in Petoskey if you want to look for Petoskey Stones and other fossils. You wil still have to walk over smaller rocks to get to the water but it is a realatively short distance from parking area to the shore (maybe a 100 feet or so mostly over mowed grass). There is a paved walking path but it mostly runs parrallel to the shore. You have to go down a slope (maybe 5 to 10 feet) but if I remember right you can probably find a way down that isn't very steep (I think you can take the walking path to close to the shore). There is also a rock beach west of the breakwater in Petoskey that is easily accessed but it is pretty much picked over unless you get there right when the ice goes out or after a big storn.
The Inn at Bay Harbor has a beach that is accessible from concrete walking paths but I am not sure if it is open to the public or you have to be a guest. If you park in the parking lot and look like you own the place, most likely nobody will bother you. But that beach is also heavily picked over in the summertime. I have been told that you can find a lot of Petoskey stones there after a big storm.
I went to Michigan Tech in Houghton a long time ago. I seem to remember most shoreline areas were hard to access. You might check McLain State Park. They may have roads that get close to the shore. Thinking of it, you might check with the DNR? to see if they have a listing of handicap accessible shorelines within the state parks.
Hope this helps. Good luck hunting.

Rock clubs usually have a big rock show/sale yearly. I hope there is a nearby rock club. They can give you suggestions.
Welcome from California.
