For example, You pull a chunk out of the saw and want to put markings on the rock to guide your next cuts,
What do you use? That doesn't rub off easily?

Rub it in kitty litter first, wipe off with junk rag, then mark with a sharpie.

I use kitty litter myself. I have a plastic tub of it under my slab saws and throw every slab as it's cut in the litter. After a day a slab is pretty much oil free and a sharpie ink adheres to it easily. I also have a small plastic tub in the slop sink my clothes washing machine empties into. I put slabs into it so the washing machine soapy water empties into the plastic tub and cleans the slabs.

Use one of the fatter Sharpie's that will put a lot of ink down. Also might try aluminum or brass marking pencils but it will be hard to see as soon as the oil gets dirty.

I know everyone has their own preference on how to cut. But if I ever have to reposition a rock. I just throw it back in the vice and eyeball it. Only time I’ve ever needed a cut to follow a marked line is if I’m trying to get fire bars out of obsidian. Generally do that by hand though.

My new favorite writing tool is a Sharpie Pro pen. Writes on greasy rocks like nobodys business. My other solution is dunk it in kitty litter for a couple minutes, scrape it off and then write on it with a regular sharpie and/or scratch with an aluminum scribe.
