Oh no, how disappointing rockbrain Maybe if it’s worth the time you could make two cabs out of it. I’m curious though to see the back, how the wire is attached to the hammered portion. And did the hammered copper get extremely hard? Was it just too hard to push over the cab? |

And did the hammered copper get extremely hard? Was it just too hard to push over the cab? It got extremely hard. On the next one I annealed it with a torch. It is a bit soft, I'm hoping tumbling in stainless steel shot will harden it up enough.  The entire wrap was done with 2 pieces of wire. 20 gauge square was bent in half. The bent part became the bottom "prong". Then just make free form prongs out the side. I did this on an outline drawing of the cab. Hammer out the prongs and then wrap the top with half round to form the bail. I bent the bail and continued with the half round to tie it back to the frame. The bail bent over the top of the cab towards the front helps hold the cab in place too. Excuse the messiness on the back as I didn't finish this piece. I'll post pics of the other one I did. |

I see the crack now. If you don't mind me nagging... those bail wires need to be pointed in and down. That will snag and scratch. I know this is broke anyway, but it's a good habit to turn those wires down toward the cab. Great wrap, though. |

I would have never left those bail wires like that. I don't know that I would have pointed them in but they would definitely be flat and curled more. I'm a bit embarrassed by the messiness of tying the bail back to the frame too. |

Aren't we all.... Sometimes that just happens.
OK, I'll nag again... You see where the binding wires meet at he bottom of the bail on the back? You can lift that last bind and cut it back to meet with the last one. It will look much nicer and be less apt to snag and pull.

This is the other one I did. Again, not my entry for the challenge. I've got another one for that that I need to patina. This time I carried the bail wires all the way down the back and tied them in with 26 gauge wire.    Very nice!!! Loving that look. The back is much neater, too. |

This is the other one I did. I like that one a-lot. The curved stone makes that one look graceful.
I also like that you can't see the bail attachment on the back.

Thanks Tela. Thank you Patty. I was afraid it was going to be too soft after annealing but it hardened up nicely when I tumbled it in shot. I did some patina work tonight, I'll probably post it in a different thread.

Very nice rockbrain ! I actually really like the back of your first (broken) one. I think it’s interesting how the wires wrap around the cab. Almost like modern art. I know you didn’t finish it because it broke but I think just figuring out a cleaner way to complete the bail attachment and that would be a really fun design to repeat. This most recent one looks very involved and also artsy. I like how it hangs almost from two different bails. Very unique. 👍 |

Thank you Tela. I really appreciate the high praise. I'm trying to draw designs out but don't usually get very far. I just have to keep thinking about the design and work it out in my head. This one took a while and now that it's done I think I've come up with much better way to do the frame on the stone and attach it to the hammered surround. rockbrain That is pretty cool, all the colors just melt into each other. Great design  Thanks! I try and be unique but this design is one of the few I consider completely mine and not leaning heavily on someone else. Some day I might buy some heavy gauge wrapping wire but the stripped out electrical romex seems to be working fine. Very nice rockbrain ! I actually really like the back of your first (broken) one. The design of the first one is interesting to do because of the way you lay the whole wrap out in kind of a freeform blob before you wrap any of it around the stone. I'm going to try some more of those. They are really quick to do too! I've been bending the bail wires around to the front over the top of the cab and then taking them to the back and tying them in. Even if I'm neat it ends up kind of thick at the back of the top. I think i'll try hammering some out and bend them around to the front more like this last one. |

rockbrain I wonder if (on your first broken style) you could lay out the blob of squiggled wires and then when bending them around the cab also bend one part over the top of the cab in a way that a simple bail loop could be hooked inside of it. If that makes any sense? It may help to already have the bail loop slid over the blob of wires and be able to position it just so as you are bending the wires around. Again, hopefully that makes sense. Something to play with anyway as opposed to the traditional wire wrapped bail.

Nice ! I have to agree with Tela, I could see a guy wearing it, especially with the subdued colored cab. Interesting ideas in that one - thanks for the inspiration.
I do think Khara is on the right track with your other hammered wire wrap with no bail, but include a loop.
