Weather was cold and windy, however cooperated a bit for me to go investigate a new site outside of Paulina. These first few pics are from the first site, and then decided to swing by eagle rock on the way back so some members could see the original dig site of Eagle rock. I didn't find anything worth my time at the first site. Lots of petrified wood and junk agate. I did find some big chunks of plume, but quickly realized it was the exact same stuff my grandpa discovered over 60+ years ago (He's beat me to all the spots lol) and have a stash of at my place, so didn't bother lugging anymore back home. The first pic is a view from up on the ridge line. And the second pic is of my friend Tom. He just couldn't leave the big chunk of quartz/banded agate behind. Wanted it as lawn art. So I packed all his wood and agate out for him while he packed the boulder lol. Now for eagle rock. The ascent up to the dig site. Large boulder blasted out with jasper and black plume. This is junk however. The plume is so dense that its essentially just solid black jasper. This site was originally mined by Shirley Quant. They did a hell of a job getting the material out of there. They essentially blasted the cliff face, then came in with cats and cut the cliff face off. This is the remanence of whats left there. Big seams in the cliff face, but nothing worth wasting your time with. Place is gutted as far as im concerned. Anyways... now you all get to see where a central oregon classic came from.

Thanks for the trip! The first picture is so... picturesque. Just a small fraction of the range of land I cover on foot.

Cool field trip and history report.👍 I imagine your grandpa would get a real kick out of you hiking around all these same spots as him decades before. Is he still around? Did he know you continued with his legacy?
I’m going to go look for Eagle Rock examples now as I don’t think I’m familiar with it…

Did he know you continued with his legacy? I’m going to go look for Eagle Rock examples now as I don’t think I’m familiar with it… He passed in 2005. But he knew I was carrying on the legacy as I had been hounding with him since I was knee high to a grasshopper. My friend and I were literally laughing about that yesterday. Saying my grandpa was looking down laughing saying I already beat you to it. He was one of the central Oregon originals to extensively find and mine the original deposits of some well known material. Eagle rock is pretty fascinating stuff as there is so much variety in that one location.

It is great that you have strong familial connections to the land (and the rock in it). Beautiful countryside!

Only thing that bums me out, is that my grandpa isn’t still around to see the discoveries I’ve made. But hey… at least I get to share them with you guys. I got a site I’ll be bringing an excavator into next summer. You get some plume, you get some plume, everyone gets some plume 😂

I seriously never tire of seeing the area out there. I'm glad you said it was gutted...that way I know I don't have to hike up that hill when I finally get out to see you one of these days! LOL

Thank you for taking us along. I'm curious about how the eagle rock material looks like. I did a Google search. Is it the stuff with the black plumes?

Thank you for taking us along. I'm curious about how the eagle rock material looks like. I did a Google search. Is it the stuff with the black plumes? Comes in a variety of different styles/colors. But yes, black plumes is one of them. I have stuff in red, yellow, white, pink and a combination of all to blue agate with black metallic plume.
