That's what my light box looks like! Man I was a little skeptical at first, but after looking into some home made ones, I was thinking it can't be that difficult. I think I spent 6 bucks total, maybe 7...
I have to invest in a couple lights though, taking two lamps apart every time and stringing the cords across the room onto the table is only going to work for so long lol

Weight - 33.8g This one has potential depending on how clean I can keep the druzy and what colors show up. There is a pretty nice range already, so fingers crossed there is more under the skin. I'll probably have to work an edge to keep everything even.
Prediction - I think this one should turn out nicely and be one of the best small rocks in this batch. Status - Rough I'm pretty excited about this one. I think the prominent banding on the top and the potential for a crazy lace look on the bottom could be really cool!!

It looks like you are on a fun journey here Chad Son Of Beach. I’ll definitely be following this thread.

Noteworthy updates after 1 week I took pictures off all the rocks and then realized what a chore posting each rock every week would be, sooo that's not going to happen.
Colors starting to pop, will work it on the flat lap likely next week
The Bahia that isn't broke as expected and I won't be tracking it any longer
Wild color change from white to brown I didn't see coming. I wonder how much more color will change My hope is waning on this one already...
I'm a little more excited about this one however, the white is very soft seems like it's falling out.
The first big break and I think it's for the better, now two pretty rocks Downside, not a Bahia. Plus side, some kind of brown/Amber chalcedony? If someone has a better name, let me know.
Also, for those following the progress on this project, let me know if this format works as I'm still learning what looks best and is easy to use.

This one is so cool! We find similar around central Texas. My wife calls them potato rocks since that’s what they look like with the ‘skin’ on. Your entire thread was a very nice read. I’ll be following as you go!

Have you had any success tumbling them?
It looks pretty solid, I think those cracks were there before I rock smashed...

Chad, I actually kind of liked those links inserted like that! Good to know, I still feel like maybe there is a smoother way. Knowing me I'll keep playing around with the format a little.

Thanks for the update! Very interesting to follow. And I can definitely see how much work it takes to update the progress of each rock. Some of the roughs you show, such as this one: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/1303374 look more like the "Sumatra Island Banded Agate" I got from riverbendlapidary (see one of my tumbles here: flic.kr/p/2p4jb8d ), which reveals translucent caramel chalcedony area that have high polish, and soft white areas that don't polish. For comparison, the smaller Bahia agate roughs I got from rockshed tend to reveal more red yellow orange after tumbling (one example here: flic.kr/p/2ppfyqy ).

Yup, I’ve had good luck tumbling them. I’ve done several from hand size on down. This is the largest one I’ve done so far. Ours tend to have iron oxide (I believe) inclusions, either mustard yellow or red, sometimes black.

Interesting, I'll have to keep an eye on the colors as they progress (I should've taken a group shot....) as I've really only tumbled a half dozen before this adventure.

Noteworthy updates this week, I think it's up to 3 now? There were a handful of rocks that I put some work on the flat lap, but they wouldn't photograph well with the scratches so I decided to run them a week in coarse. The little guy probably had the most work done last week. I think after weighing it again, it's nearly half it's original size already, but it seems to be working out. A little more tumbling work is needed (those little pits just go on forever), but there is some impressive banding coming thru. I don't know if you can see it, but the top down picture really shows how much is going on underneath that red layer Really enjoying how this one is turning out, lots of variety in patterns and colors. Fingers crossed the flaky stuff takes care of itself sooner than later Ahh yes the prodigy. This one also spent a lot of time on the flat lap the weekend prior, really want to keep as much as possible. It looks like some of those pits go deep and may not be as stable as I had hoped. I'm not quite as excited as first glance, but there is still plenty to like. I think there are many weeks ahead for this guy. A pleasant surprise, this one is turning out better than I had hoped. Some really neat stop and go pattern on the backside. Lots of work to go, but it'll be worth. Probably the most striking color change of the bunch, it's worth showing that off if nothing else. I don't think it's gone deep enough to find it's pattern yet, and I assume there will be more updates to come. Mia, applauding another week of work

Weight - 48.8g I had forgotten about this one in another tumbler when I started this thread and have been meaning to update...so here it is Prediction - I liked the shape but honestly didn't know what to expect. I'm still not super stoked about it, but after this week there is some really nice orbs starting to show up on the outer edges. I guess it might deliver... Status - 1 Week Coarse 1/30/2024 1 Week Coarse and some flat lap to hit deep spot.

I will be out of town in Japan for a couple of weeks, so no updates for likely for a while....
Some stones are well on there way and are almost ready for secondary stages, others have yet to expose what's underneath which blows my mind 5 weeks into this.
Not a hobby for the impatient lol
Still working on getting the lighting and settings locked in. This weeks pictures look a little washed out by the light.
This guy is making good progress and I'm enjoying the pastel colors coming thru so far. It's been ready for an update, just hasn't been as striking as others.
I'm enjoying this rock more than I originally thought I would. It has some weird "squiggle" banding going on in a couple layers and some neat pattern still waiting to be exposed, that'll probably be the next time it's updated
Introducing a rock I forgot to include originally...
This one has so much going on and it really deserves more screen time. Turning into a nice white now, I still think it will metamorph into a different color again before it's all said and done
I guess I updated this one last time and apparently was so impressed, thought it deserved two in a row. You can start to see the final colors a little....
