I'm heading down to the L.A. area tomorrow to see the first of 3 shows at the Troubadour by Billy Gibbons and Friends. I'm excited for the show, I've caught ZZ Top a few times but never seen Billy solo. Also excited to see who the "friends" will be. I'm going with my younger brother who has become interested in rock collecting. We were going to head to Gem Hill for a day, but he just called and wants to go to Lavic Siding and maybe some other spots nearby there. Neither of us have ever been and I'm looking for any and all advice I can get here to make the trip worthwhile. I've been doing searches here and have found some good stuff, but most of the postings are pretty old and I know things change. Also looking at the Cady Mountains. Thanks!

Check out the Lapidary Dave YouTube channel on his visit to the Crayon Box. This is a northern part of Lavic that is easy to access and I have found mossy stuff and brecciated stuff there too. It’s also only a mile or so from the western entrance to the south Cadys. First pic is the approx location of the Crayon Box, this is entering from the west at the Hector Rd exit. Second pic is the entrance to the south Cady’s circled where you head north to the Power line road. I think this is actually a gas line road but everyone and even the map call it the power line road and it’s the second road perpendicular to the entrance road. You will have to cross a small concrete apron? About a mile up the entrance road. 1.6 miles east on the power line road ( at the arrow ) Jasper Hill will be on your left with a rockier access road. Look for the bright colors; it’s only a 100 yards or so north of the power line road. I found good stuff in the washes east and north east of Jasper Hill proper: mossy type stuff, Jasper with a hematite sheen to it, and a gorgeous green agate nodule.

The correct road to Jasper Hill is a little north of the big steel power line towers, not the closest one to them. As you make the right where I put the arrow you should see yellow poles periodically on your left marking a gas line as you head east.

I was concerned about rain but it looks like Lavic is good until Friday. I was hoping it would rain and then clear up, but 68 and partially sunny sounds good enough! Hopefully I'm still going. We're getting our kitchen remodeled. Diane caught her foot on a rug and had a hard fall on the concrete floor last night. Took the brunt of the fall on her shoulder with the torn rotator cuff that she's been doing PT for. 6 hours at the emergency room but nothing broken. I still have to see what kind of shape she's in when she gets up this morning, plus finishing emptying the stuff from the kitchen as the contractor is supposed to be starting this morning.

I have a chunk of that in the saw as we speak. Couldn't remember where it came from until now.

Last time I was there I got a kick out of seeing the Ludlow grave yard. I keep telling my wife to plant me there when it's time.

Thanks chris1956 and , jasoninsd Diane is doing much better. Here's a couple things I found. I'll be adding some more pics later. A really nice piece of red moss. I just wish it was bigger! I can't believe how hard the Jasper is there. It looked glassy and shiny where it was broke. It sounded like glass when you threw it in your bucket. I did the cab picture with a glare to help show up the hematite that's in the seams.

Thanks so much for the guidance quartzilla! We didn't find much when we got on the north side of the freeway by Jasper Hill. We were a little confused and went a little too far in. When we came back. We looked at YouTube and these postings again and have it figured out for next time.

That’s awesome. How was the concert? It was ok. I would have preferred more of Billy and less of the other people. All the "friends" played a couple of their songs first. None of them were people that I would have gone to see. Then when Billy came out and did his thing there were 7 guitar players on stage! I've never been a fan of that. Even when it's several guitar players that I really like, it just never seems to come off that good.
