Wind chill is a media promoted statistic. Wind chill only has an effect on naked bodies and nobody is stupid enough to go outside nekked in cold weather. Rocks and trees are not affected by wind chill and neither am I. Just like the media invented heat index where they say it feels like 95 although the actual temp is 89. If you wear windproof clothing wind chill has no effect. The weather folks like to hype it up, doesn't do anybody any good. I think this is looking at things through too narrow of a lens. Clothing keeps us warm because it insulates pockets of air that we're able to keep warm with our body heat. While windproof clothing stops the cold wind from passing through, it disrupts the insulation through compression; pushing out air we've warmed and replacing it with colder air that we now must warm. Plus, no clothing is completely windproof. They all have seams, and we must have *some* exposed skin, unless you don't like to breathe. For heat, humans cool through evaporation of sweat. Higher humidity prevents that, making it feel hotter than it is. 90° in Arizona is very different than 90° in Florida, and the heat index better illustrates that than simply looking at the temperature.

khara. Now it’s time for your work situation to improve. That’s inhumane.

🤣 Pat You know, it’s funny, I actually enjoy it. After two decades working way too many hours sitting at a computer, and damaging my body doing so, this physical labor is a really welcome change.

I would also guess North Dakota for the coldest temps in populated places in the conterminous states during the past 24-hours. On some of the highest mountains in the Rockies perhaps even colder...

MsAli Take a peek in the Shoutbox. ThomasT Peter Sinks, Utah has been leading the way about half the time this season. Good explanation here.

Our temperature swings are something this time of year. This morning when I got up it was 16. Right before the sun went down it was 56. Suppose to get down to 23 tonight with a high of 57 tomorrow. Weird a$$ weather here.

One of my riders at work, coming in from Seattle, said he was in the teens there. We have been mostly high 30's and 40's at night, and had a couple nights that it froze last week. Days generally reach upper 50's to as much as 70 degrees sometimes. Wind definitely had a huge effect on the effects of cold, especially along with precipitation, and you don't have to be naked, just wearing clothes that breathe too much can lead to hypothermia even in 50's and 60's with wind and especially rain. not hype at all.

We had -19 F a couple days ago. It’s warm compared to those east of us.

"The COLD" is the best natural digger... rockslides and cracked boulders from these hard freezes. Continuously turning mountains into rubble. Spring rains will present more material to pick thru and observe what is coming out from inside these old mountains.

Courtship for roadrunners tends to start in mid February but surprisingly we had a pair come around begging for food together today, no real courtship displayed but I'm guessing it will be tomorrow. Temps are freezing at night and 50 degrees on the patio today at 13:00.

High 50's and rain for the next week. Too cold to work outside. I've never ice fished but grinding is like ice fishing without gloves.

E-Postcard from RickBIt topped 70 degrees here in South Myrtle Beach SC this afternoon but it is supposed to get into the low 20's at night this coming weekend. Had to run the air conditioner in the truck this afternoon.

Austin, Tx. hit a low for yesterday of 15 which was the record for this day. The oranges and other plants around(outside) the house are toast but so far the heated garage that is filled with potted plants is a nice 70 with two space heaters and multiple lights. The garage has many large potted Asian-semitropical plants that I am taking care of for one month while my neighbors are visiting relatives 8800 miles away in a nice warm climate. Our house-zone 8- is also filled with plants from the deck and creates a house interior that looks like an arboretum with very colorful leaves and shapes/patterns. Cold outside but warm inside as long as the gas and electric work.

Still picking ripe tomatoes inside the shop... going down to 6F tonight here in southeast Tennessee. Snow and ice on the ground and many cars and trucks in the ditch. Not supposed to get above freezing until Thursday afternoon.
