Just got in from checking on my rotary tumblers and found frozen sludge. Tumblers were in the garage and inside the garage it got down to 16 degrees last night. Live and learn! After the barrels thaw out, I’m going to explore minimizing the sound and move them into my furnace room or insulating them outside using styrofoam coolers (I hate styrofoam!!) with some holes for ventilation, as I’ve seen people post before.

I used a cardboard box over my tumblers. Kept a thermometer under the box to makes sure the temp wasn't getting too high...it wasn't. Kept it warm enough under there to keep the rotaries from freezing.

It finds every crack and divot and creates some of own divots in the rocks. I scrubbed all rocks with a soap and a brush, still was not happy and am running them in a borax bath. I had to discard some that got too eaten up. I never want to repeat this mistake! The cardboard box idea sounds good.

Indoor/outdoor thermometer – stick one of the remotes in the enclosure. Memory will track high/low temp.

Put some FDA approved or environmentally safe glycol antifreeze in there perhaps, and let her run...

I think the cardboard box should work. I tried a box over mine once to minimize the noise and it got pretty warm in there. I would have tried putting a lot of water in the barrel and tumble them to get the solid slurry running again, or at least to make it easier to get off. Don't know if that would work.

Windshield washer fluid as the liquid? Although alcohol tends to dry out rubber…I am not sure what long term effects it might have on a rubber drum that always has liquid sloshing around inside.
