My stepson and his girlfriend of eight years (she might as well be our daughter-in-law) were expecting their first child at the end of March. Donavin is a firefighter for the city, and Kayla is a NICU nurse. Well...God and/or the Universe had some other plans as to the due date. On January 30th, our world went into an uproar as we got a phone call from Donavin that Kayla had gone into labor...two months early. Well...a lot of prayers and chewed up nails later, and Beckett was born on January 31st. I finally got the "ok" to post something about all this. Beckett was 3 pounds 12 ounces...and 17 inches long. (I'm thinking no wonder he wanted out...he ran out of room!) He was of course admitted to the NICU since he was so premature. He was put on a feeding tube, and was put on a machine like a sleep-app thingy since his lungs were underdeveloped...or so they thought. Since the time he was born 6 days ago, he has been taken off the feeding tube and is already getting mom's milk. He is also been moved to the lowest setting on the air pressure thingy...basically he's just about doing all the work for breathing. He has also already had an actual bath...and has gotten to wear clothes! Essentially, he is progressing at an unbelievable rate...surprising family and medical staff. He will still stay in NICU for several more weeks. Mom will be going back to work while he's there...but she's not "supposed" to spend time with him while she's working...and of course Dad went back to work today. So...here's some pics of our new grandson!

And congratulations Jason! Thanks again PS! I will definitely wish him all the best...when I finally get to see him. My wife has been able to go up there...she had to go through decontamination to be able to touch him...but she knew it was worth it.

That must have been terrifying. So glad everything worked out and he responded so well to his head start on life! I'm happy to see he's looking good and healthy! Congratulations, grandpa! Is this your first grandchild, jasoninsd?

Many well wishes for him to continue to thrive and congratulations to you all! Thanks Ali! None of these three pictures show them, like some other pictures we have...but this little guy has some LONG fingers! I keep saying he's going to be palming a basketball by age three! LOL

Congrats, Gramps and Grams and the whole family! He is precious and so tiny. Beautiful! Sounds like Beckett has a will of his own and is going to be a handful as he grows up. Jason, you better get yourself in shape. I have a feeling you'll be chasing him all over soon. Glad everything worked out and he's doing so well.

Congratulations Jason! Glad everything is going so well. Sounds like he'll be out of there and home in no time. There may be something better than being a grandparent but I can't think of what it is right now.

How wonderful for your family, Jason — congratulations! I love the "Hug Me" outfit and the "The winner is Beckett!", arms raised, fighter symbolism in the last photo.

Holy cat snacks Gramps! He is friggin' adorable. All the best to you, Blue & Mrs. Jason, I know you're going to be amazing grandparents (and you will never, ever introduce him to fruitcake, always make sure he has a puppy, and knows the difference between hot & cold taps right?). Here's to a speedy NICU discharge so he can be home with the family, getting loved (and licked) on. Welcome to the world Beckett! It's going to be amazing and heartbreaking and crazy but you are already more loved that the biggest Fairburn agate (that's like, tons and tons, don't worry, you will understand one day) and you are going to have a blast with your grandpa!

Congratulations Jason - a new guardian of the rocks. Thanks Rick! I need a new guardian! Our new dog Blue keeps trying to steal the rocks off my display shelf! LOL Congrats, Gramps and Grams and the whole family! He is precious and so tiny. Beautiful! Sounds like Beckett has a will of his own and is going to be a handful as he grows up. Jason, you better get yourself in shape. I have a feeling you'll be chasing him all over soon. Glad everything worked out and he's doing so well. Thank you Robin! At the rate I'm going, I have to rely on the fact that "round" is a shape to be in! LOL Thanks Lee! A new baby! What could be better? Congrats to the whole family! He looks amazing. Thanks Tela! Ummm....a box full of Fairburns! Okay, okay...just kidding!! LOL Congratulations Jason and family. That is a tiny one. Glad everything is going well. Thanks Chris! Yeah, he's definitely small...but I think he's showing he's got a giant fighting spirit. (Thankfully!) Congratulations Jason! Glad everything is going so well. Sounds like he'll be out of there and home in no time. There may be something better than being a grandparent but I can't think of what it is right now. Thank you my friend! One of my favorite comic strips is Calvin and Hobbes. I remember one where Calvin asked his dad why the sun went from east to west in the sky. His dad replied, "Solar winds". I can't wait to start teaching Beckett important things like that! LOL Congratulations to the new parents and grandparents! It sounds like he is doing great and just wanted to get an early start! Thanks Brian! Apparently he was the only one who heard the starter's pistol! LOL How wonderful for your family, Jason — congratulations! I love the "Hug Me" outfit and the "The winner is Beckett!", arms raised, fighter symbolism in the last photo. Thanks Gary! My wife has been finding numerous "excuses" to go to the store now...and each time she comes back with half a dozen outfits for him...all of which she swears were on "clearance"! LOL Holy cat snacks Gramps! Thanks Mel! This made me smile, laugh, and choke up just a little.
